Sambucus mexicana

We have a small Mexican elder that we had to transplant from our front yard because our dogs kept running over it, and we thought they were killing it. Now even in the "new" location (for almost three years), it leafs out beautifully in the very early spring, but by about early July, the leaves have almost all fallen out. It does this every year, and I notice that some people in our area have beautiful leafing ones, and others seem to do what ours is doing. Anybody out there know what we need to do differently?????

As I understand it, this behavior is not uncommon for mexican elder trees. I have been told that this is especially common for young trees and less so for more established ones. They drop their leaves under stress during the summer heat. They could be considered 'summer deciduous'.

Any chance you are watering it too much or have the wrong soil? It is evergreen in chaparral areas with sandy soil.
