tif bermuda

I live in Phoenix. I have mature healthy tif bermuda. However, in two areas that are located by mesquite trees along borders, the grass grows very poorly. Some of the problems can be shade, but that doesn’t seem to make sense as the sun does get to the areas. Does the mesquite drop some thing that gets the soil out of balance? Is there a particular product that may help?
Seems to me that many golf courses here in the Phoenix area have mesquites on the course and often the grass seems just fine underneath.
Anything thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

| Part of the problem with growing grass under trees is that the tree roots are competing with the grass for nutrients and water. Your tif will probably not be as thick under the mesquite as out in full day sun, but you can get it to perk up a bit by fertilizing more frequently with something organic like Milorganite (for complete feeding) or rabbit pellets (for nitrogen). Give the area a supplemental watering as well. The down side to this is that you'll have to prune your mesquite more often because it'll be thrilled with the extra nutrients. Crista |
