Starting a native plant garden

I'm new to this site and want to introduce myself a bit. I live in southern California, love nature and hiking. Over the years I developed a passion and interest in our local native plants. I hated how my front yard looked and two years ago, I decided to move forward on my dream of having a bit of "wildness" on my property. I removed the lawn and prepared the area for a variety of natives. I alson included a huge, dry stream bed that mimics what you would see when hiking in the wilderness. I love my garden so much, that I started blogging about it and sharing it with others.

RE: Starting a native plant garden

I visited your blog, and the one picture I saw looked like a nice garden in coastal California. What is your Sunset Western Garden Book zone? Some of us may not be able to dialogue meaningfully with you because many other areas of the Southwest are going to be much drier, colder, and/or hotter than your garden. On the other hand, many of us are perfectly willing to help, appreciate, or commiserate to your heart's content.

I, myself am interested in native plant gardening, but I have such a hard time resisting any plant, native or foreign, that my garden is always on the edge of total chaos!

Exclusive native gardens are rare birds here, because our strictly native vegetation around Phoenix, while diverse, is very sere and sparse most of the year. Most of us take a broader view of "native", cherry-picking pretty plants from all over the state, or the greater Southwest.
I wish you welcome, and good fellowship! : )
