What kinds of seed-grown annuals, and bulbs star in southern NM?

We are new to the Las Cruces area. I have been perusing seed, and bulb, catalogs. What kinds of annuals & bulbs do WELL, here, in Southern NM? Any? I am considering planting Dahlias, Nasturtiums, Snapdragons. Are there any cultivars that will stand up to the summer heat? Are there ANY annuals that will take baking heat? We have a huge amount of bare ground, surrounding our recently-constructed home, with no shade,.. I had hoped to fill our barren landscape with something "quick". Any ideas..more than welcome...

Welcome to the desert country!
I think Iris will do well for you. In warmer weather zinnias will do well. Use LOTS of compost for your soil. Don't fight the desert, learn to live with it. Plant some pomegranite trees.
