A misunderstanding in the garden

I took my day care kids to the nursery last summer and told them they could choose some plant for their garden. I expected them to choose something with bright gaudy flowers but was surprised when all six agreed on 3 different ferns. They took them home and planted them and watched faithfully but always from a distance or from around the corner of the garage. With a bit of disappointment they finally asked why the dinosaurs hadn't moved into their new "fern forest". I guess they were listening when I talked about habitat destruction and extinct animals but weren't quite old enough to understand.
What strange garden ideas does your kids have?

| I also worked in a preschool. I had bought in a bucket of "forest duff" and we were sorting carefully sorting through it with tweezers and toothpicks etc. One of the boys found a maple seed that led to conversation about how trees grow. He requested a cup and dirt to plant the maple seed. As he was leaving for home with his cup, he announced that he would bring me maple syrup next week. |
