starting a small botanical garden

Hi all,

I am turning the section of my garden adjacent to my home into a small botanical garden. It will be primarily for school age kids and their parents who live in or visit the area. The plants are pretty much there already but they aren't yet labeled. I am looking for creative but relatively inexpensive ideas to labels the plants (primarily trees and shrubs). I want it to be largely educational but since this is a labor of love people will have to explore the gardens themselves if I am not around to give a tour. I want to create something that will be an experience to visit! Any ideas?

A simple way would be to individually make the specimen plants with either just a number, or with their botanical / latin name and possibly their common name as well, e.g.

"Quercus virginiana"
Live Oak

And at the start of the 'trail head' or whathaveyou, some starting point, maybe make a plaque or display that lists the plants by number and maybe goes into more depth about their specifics. Native plant here, butterfly plant here, etc.

Also, this sounds like something to bring up with the school. Not that you're asking for donations, but you could involve them. Get ideas from students and teachers. Maybe they could create the display to be mounted in the garden.
