Preschool Garden Help

Need help in planning a preschool garden. I already have a space that is 15x5 above the ground by about a foot-1/2. They have used this space in the past, but have not kept up with it. Right now there is strawberrys in about 1/4 of it and slowly taking it over. And one head of lettuce popping out of the ground. I wanna start over with some themes. Can I do a spaghetti or pizza garden in half and a butterfly in the other half?
What do I need to do to prepare the soil since it has been used in the past for gardening. I live in North Texas. It gets a lot of sun where it is.

Thanks! Ariel

I decided that I would go with just a vegetable garden. This way I would avoid bees. Anyone have any ideas... please let me know.

I'd add some compost before planting. And as far as what plants I'd probably due carrots, tomatoes, radish, and lettuce. Is the school open all summer? Because then you could grow watermellon and pumpkins and when they are small go out with the kids and with a neddle scratch their names into the pumpkins or watermellon and their names will grow with them. If you grow cucumbers you can slip a baby one into a coke bottle and let it grow to fill the jar. It becomes a puzzle for others to figure out how you got the huge cucumber into such a small opening.
