Help-shady yard and kids-need advice

Hi, I think this is the right forum to post this question as I'm hoping most people will have kids and might have some experience in htis area. We live in a small city on the coast of Connecticut I believe it is zone 6.

Anyway, between the neighboring houses and the huge trees that we can't really afford to cut down (and don't really want to) our yard is pretty shady. We also have kids and to make matters worse-dogs-but I'm less concerned about them, as they can be fenced off if need be. What I really want is to make a nice space that the kids can enjoy and won't kill us trying to maintain. I wanted to have a small children's garden and some lawn to run around on, but the lawn just seems to turn to dirt.

Does any one have any suggestions? We already have a large area by the house sectioned off for a patio-but that doesn't seem run around friendly. Should I abandon the idea of a lawn area? Has anyone succeeded in having a kid friendly yard minus a lawn?
