I'm new... Help with containers

Hello Everyone,

I have posted this on two other forums as well.

I am new to this forum. I was wondering if someone could give me advice on how to prevent my wild 3 year old son from knocking off my container plants. I want to have plants outside but I am limited as to placement.

I live in an apt on the ground floor and basically have one wall that is brick. (I can hang wall baskets) I have no overhang, so I can't really have hanging plants. I am limited to placing them on top of a 2.5 foot wall which my son can reach and promptly knock over! I have lost a lot of plants!

I have been using plastic containers 4-6-inch size because if he knocks them down they won't break. But they seem to be just too light. Would using larger pots help?

Help! Any advice or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks, kpgardener

Heavier pots could be dangerous if they fell. I think you have to try working with your son instead of working with the pots.

Have you tried to put some other things on the wall that he IS allowed to knock over - toys, trucks, flowerpots filled with tennisballs? Then he can pick them up and knock them over again? Teach him which is okay and which is not. Or plant cactus. He may not like touching them (ouch!) Or ask for his help in planting the flowers and getting him to water them and take care of them.
