must haves in a kids' garden...

There was a thread on this in the cottage garden forum a while back, but DD mentioned this today so I thought I'd create a new post. The past thread was before I was on the forums... sorry if this gets too redundant.

We had in the fall 9 jr. highers came to help in our garden area in the front, back, and side yard for service project time. While trimming roses, planting daffodil bulbs, seeds and more- one child discovered that we had a little TOAD in our front yard!! All these months later "Mr. Toadie" is still here, we recently re-sited him to the back yard to the in-process Secret Garden we're creating with our two children for them. DD said I should write about a toad being a "must have" for a cottage garden. I will post a pic of Mr. Toadie very soon!

Gosh, I remember as a kid while growing up at our family's house that we had a soggy wet little section next to the fence on one side of the yard and finding a toad in the yard....

Don't forget mr. toadie's living quarters........we take gourds, cut them in half........top to bottom, or side to side. Clean out each half and using snips, cut a door along one edge.....about 2 inches wide and 2 inches high.

Let the kids decorate.
Suggestions: Hop on Inn....H. Toad Proprietor
Hoppie's House
Its a Hoppin' Place!

Its all fun! The kids can deccorate with paint, sticks and rocks.........whatever! Give it a good coat of polyurethane, (clear varnish) and let it dry.

Now, just put it in the flower garden. Suggest the kids use bright colors so it shows up among the flowers and other plants. (it basically looks like a bowl, upside down in the garden)
My grandkiddles have put them all around our house, and in the flower beds.

What a great idea ... we have 2 toads that my kids have named Kermit and Chucky! They'll love having a house :-)

Real interesting. Having a garden for kids is good as it helps them to appreciate the value and beauty of nature.
