to pave or not to pave....?

Hi! I'm new to this site and to gardening as well. My family and I have a 4 year old home with a poorly graded lot - especially the backyard. The yard slopes away from the house and is not terribly interesting. The only features we have right now are the transformer boxes for our neighborhood, a cedar picket fence and the deck.
We have a 16-month-old daughter and are trying to decide how to come up with a nice space for her to play, without rolling down the hill each time she takes a tumble. (it was funny the first time it happened!) We want to get a Little Tikes-style climber with a slide for her but don't know if we should do a pave stone patio or just leave the yard in it's uneven state. Any help/ideas would be great!! Thanks!

RE: to pave or not to pave....?

My kids are long grown, but they liked our patio to ride their bikes, and they also liked grass in the yard for the swing set, picnics, birthday parties, playhouse, swimming pool, tent. They liked a sand box area also, and places to dig. (boys obviously)

If there is no shade, you might want to plant a tree.

I saw a yard once where they paved a circular loop around the yard for the kids to ride their bikes.

Think about designing the play areas so they can be seen from the house as much as possible so as she gets older, you can be inside (cooking or whatever!) but still keep an eye on her and friends as they play.

I probably have not answered your questions at all, but thought I'd share what I remember our kids doing in the yard. I think it would be a nice investment to level the yard as much as possible to make a nice area for her and friends, because unless she's an "inside girl" she'll spend a lot of time out there.

Good luck.
