The book "The Secret Life of Plants" (the author's name escapes me) has a chapter on music's effects on plants. The book might help give you some direction.

There's lots of research that's been done on this subject -- do a web search on google.com! If I were doing the experiment, I'd use bean seeds that germinate quickly and are easy to grow, grow them in dixie cups or small pots, maybe 6 plants each, music and non. You have to make sure the growing medium, care, light are all the same. That's the only way you can measure if there's any effect. If you don't want your bean sprouts to be leggy (too long and stringy to be strong), make sure the light is not too far away from them, and move it up as the plants get bigger. This is a great experiment, because your plants themselves become part of your exhibit! I did it when I was 13, and I'm 50 now!! Have fun!! Linda

Nevermind my aforemetioned request I changed my question to "Do plants that are exposed to music grow better than plants that aren't?"

I saw a tv show recently about this. they had three groups of pea vines. one was exposed to classical music and talked to sweetly, the other was exposed to angry rock music and also yelled at, and the third was exposed to total silence. They measured the total biomass at the end of the experiment and suprizingly the ones that had been exposed to the angry rock music and mean comments grew slightly better than the other two. Try to google for a link to the show. wish I could remember the name. Theresa.

real tough to establish a double blind on this as so many factors can effect the experiment. soil content/makeup water, sunlight ,on the one side and on the other the type music, volume, distance from source etc. Would like to see the kids post some of their findings after they do some experiments on this subject.

The name of that show was "Myth Busters" I think. The results were very suprising. I did not expect that outcome!

Yes, that was it. They also blew up a house using too many roach and flea bombs. So I guess that one is not a myth! Theresa.

I to am doing a project on plant growth and music. I have found that Dan Carlson is a reputable scientist whose area of expertise is music and plant growth. I am currently trying to find a way to contact him through phone or e-mail. My problem is- When music is played for a plant, does it effect it? If so is it a posotive or negative effect? And also which music effects the plant in which way? if you want to read about him you may want to visit this url. If any one can help me find a book or two that would aply to my problem it would be greatly appreciated if you could e-mail them to me. Members can see my e-mail. Thank a Bunch! Theresa |

I'm not expert, but just recently starting out with gardening. Doing a search on this website will yield lots of ideas with plants and music as well as similar threads that have the involve the same topic. If time is an issue, check out the attached link for fast growing plant ideas. Members, please correct me if I'm wrong. I haven't read every article or thread that has been started relating to the subject, but you can try using all types of music ranging from J.S. Bach to Britney Spears to Tupac Shakur. Musical instruments vs none at all or just vocal music by itself. Go wild! It's your experiment. Ask yourself these questions: how many times you will be repeating the experiment, what temperature the water you will be using, what food if any will added, what are the levels of loudness that will be playing, what is the length of time the songs will be playing, what constants will be kept the same throughout the experiment(temperature, amount of water addded, food, music, etc.). When you finish can you post your results and paper if possible. Thanks!

Well, I have been searching for this exact question, and I can't come up with the right answer. I know that music DOES have an effect on plants, but I want to know WHY. HOW. What is in the sound waves and what is in the plant that makes it grow differently? If anyone reading this has an answer, I need (and really want) to know! Thank you!

All forms of matter are constructed of different densities based on vibration. Vibration in the form of sound waves can and do have an effect on all types of matter living or otherwise. Anyone really interested in the subject should watch a movie called What The Bleep Do We Know. Even though there are many types of music the sound waves that they produce can be separated into negative and positive tones. Negative toned music can still be enjoyable to some people but its undeniable that it will produce negative outcomes and vice versa for positive tones. One major reason that music effects plant growth specifically is that sounds in nature i.e birds, insects, animals and other ambient sounds actually can cause plants to speed up photosynthesis and certain music can reproduce tones similar to that of the natural ambient ones. I am 100% positive that plants will flourish with positive toned music and that negative toned music will cause them harm.
