| I need a list of things that trees do for us and give us. Please list all of the simple such as paper and shade as well as less obvious contributions. Thank you, this is for my Greenhouse class.

| Georgia-Pacific's website has several pages that list uses for trees. My husband is a forester for the company. The things he listed off the top of his head are interesting. Ingredients in powdered cheese, make up, toothpaste, shampoo, tires, steering wheels and much more. |
Here is a link that might be useful: Unusual things made from trees.

| Too many links to read. Were trunks for silk artificial trees in there? How about shade to keep hardtop cool. Holiday trees. The Japanese made bullets of wood in World War 2, used at least in Gualdalcanal. Read it in a book called MARINE about the career of General "Chesty" Lewis B. Puller - most highly decorated Marine in USA history. Some Japanese would advance and infiltrate our lines at night, and lay low. The wooden bullets fired by other Japanese remaining in their own lines, would hit our soldiers, but burn up before travelling beyond our lines ,where the advance Japanese had gone. Don't forget Pine Nuts - that's from at least Italian Stone Pine isn't it? The one sold in pots at Christmas. Propellers used to be wood. |

So many products: Pine 'nuts' are really seeds from the Pinon pine native to the American southwest. Palms, which botanically aren't really trees, are the second most important economic plant family, behind grasses. Sugar maple trees give yummy maple syrup (hey, I live in New York state, all those fruit trees such as apple, cherry, apricot, plum, etc. , almond, witch hazel, once very commonly used to soothe burned skin, lots of different trees give precious & cheaper wood products for furniture, building, etc, oak, maple, tropical woods. Also, trees make oxygen, generate moisture keep global climate in balance (great threat of course is destruction of tropical and other forests which disrupts balance) trees serve as habitat for many animals. wow i could go on forever!!! Would love to know exactly how you may use the info. |

| Thanks people. I teach elementary school kids about plants and how to grow them. We recently celebrated the Jewish new year of the trees "Tu B'Shvat". I prepared a week long program and the information I found with your help was very valuable. Ethan |
