i have wood in my vivarium, and its covered with little white mite. originally when i first got it it had moldy gunk on it and the pet store told me to leave it in the bath tub with water and bleach. a couple weeks after i had done that and put the wood back in the tank all these little white mites appeared. they dont seem to be bothering my animals but they are just pest to me. any ideas how to get rid of them.

Ummmmmmmmmmmm. . . I assume you soaked your wood in fresh/clean water several times to get rid of any bleach it absorbed? If not, you should do that immediately. I don't know what those white mites could be. Do they move a lot? what kind of animals do you have in your terrarium?

sorry i forgot to mention that but yes i did clean my wood in water afterwards. anyways the mites dont really move alot unless u bother them like if you just look at the wood you cant hardly tell they are there, but if i blow on the wood hundreds of them run away in every direction. and as for my animals i have a water dragon, 2 anoles, and some tree frogs.

Hi
Could it be whiteflies?? I would guess some type of mold.
I would think your animals would make short work of any type insect. I usually dry the wood completely after cleaning.Unfortuneately,a terrarium is also and ideal place to grow molds and mildew.Certain types of wood seem much more prone to this .

they may just be springtails in which case there's nothing you can do and they are harmless. they used to worry me in my terrarium years ago and I would even spray some pyrethrin occasionally but there's no point. They're the most numerous multicelled creature on earth or something crazy like that. if they're not doing any harm...don't worry about them. Try some really hard wood like manzanita.

Try a different kind of branch, or if you don't really care about asthetics, go artificial. I've found that the madrone branches I hand picked, cut, and purified are still easily "infected" and will probably try something new when I change my vivarium, possibly

I've also read that Cyprus is highly moisture resistant
(www.blackjungle.com). Unfortunately that is hard for me to find in stores in Southern Oregon.
