Hi, im starting a terrerium, in a 15 gallon tank(square, not rectangular), and i was wondering, what plants would do well for me as a beginner? Please only use common names for the plants, as i am not good with scientific names.

Hi,

A 15 gal. aquarium makes for a rather small terrarium. I would suggest you do what I did and try to find miniature species for your terrarium. That is, plants that will stay small not just small plants that will grow up to be big plants eventually. I just made a terrarium out of a big 10 gal. aquarium and I stayed with very small growing plants. One place that I found miniature plants was Rob's Violets of all places. I will put a link to his miniature plant page.

There are other places where you can find small plants. I would try Lyndon Lyon's African Violets, Black Jungle and Tropiflora. Here are those links:

Good luck with your project!

I just came across a couple of plants i think will do great in my terrarium! I found these plants at Lowe's, they were a Dwarf Angelwing Begonia, and Dwarf Nerve(mosaic)Plant. Surely these are fine specimens for the tank right?

So jmc, how're things going? Just happen to come across this post. One word of caution, just because it says "dwarf" doesn't necessarily mean it will suit your needs. "Dwarf" just indicates small for that particular type of plant [ a "dwarf" redwood might still be a 20 ft tall tree]. The plants you chose will hopefully work out just fine though you might have to prune them now & then.
