inorganic terrarium medium

since the question came up in another thread about kitty litter, I thought I would post a pic of a succulent terrarium that has a similar material in it. Old fashioned kitty litter is sometimes a low fired clay. You can test a bag by submerging a sample in water for 24hrs. If it doesn't turn to muck it will be ok. I use Turface which is calcined clay in a lot of different media not just terrariums. It is a higher grade fired clay than kitty litter, but the principle is the same. It holds a lot of water while maintaining air space.

This is a Haworthia in a mix of gravel and calcined clay.

sorry about the bad pic
