Actually being bright is not as important as you'd think. In the past people judged artificial lighting by wattage and brightness. What's more important is spectrum. How it's measured I have no clue but it's all about having the correct components to grow things.

the potting material inside the terrarium is actually a type of coconut fiber, also known as coir. It's basically just shredded coconut husks. I found a bag of it at Petsmart in the reptile section. I was familiar with the material because I also grow orchids, & a lot of people I know grow their orchids in coconut husk and have good luck with it. The color of it is so pretty, it's almost like an orange brown, and it looks really nice against the green of the plants. the bag of compacted coconut husk at PetSmart is not cheap, I think it was $7 for the bag, but you get a ton of it because when you add water it expands so much, so I think it's worth the money. You just do have to understand that due to the nature of coconut husks, it does tend to break down a little bit faster, and would probably need to be replaced perhaps every 8 months to a year depending on the environment inside the terrarium.

You could wrap some Christmas lights around it. Just keep track of the temp.

I will be building a Terrascape in a 5ft x 18ins x 18ins aquarium tank and there is no way I want to keep replacing it.
