forced ventilation... a newbie

Hi ~ as you may know from previous posts I am building a large terrarium/orchidarium that measures 5 feet long, 3 feet high, and 2 ½ feet deep, totaling 37.5 cubic feet.

3 walls are made from plywood, the top is screen/glass, and the front wall is plexiglass. There is a ½ inch gap under the front plexi to prevent fogging. There are 440 watts of compact fluorescent lighting.

Obviously, due to size, heat, and humidity (auto misting system), I need some forced ventilation. I was thinking one fan on the upper part of each side wall…

I really don’t know anything about this topic. What is CFM? What level of CFM do I need? How would any of ya’ll go about ventilating this system?

Also, what exact stores can I by these fans from at a good price? The only ones I can find are usually around 30 bucks—does anyone know of any deals?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Dan

CFM- Cubic feet per minute

In my experience, unless the terrarium is sealed tight from the outside, fans should be kept internal circulating the air within the terrarium. I avoided bringing in external air because it can be quite dessicating if the source is drier than the air inside your terrarium.

I used a rather large fan from the RatShack, and I'm very happy with it. I think it's this guy: http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=273-243

It costs around $20 at the ttore, but it's a very sturdy unit and I'm very happy with it. The frame and blade assembly are all aluminum.

pump the air from below. using a blower fan from radio shack for fax machines, and some pvc to make a air duct.
bore out a stone with a good drill, afix the two in the vivarium, then drill tiny holes opposite the countersunk hole that fits the pvc...make sense? email me if not...
