| Well Ellie had her surgery last Tues, came home Wed, and has been licking her wound ever since though she is not 'supposed' to do that. Finally today I fashioned some protection for her would, first covering it with a good layer of vaseline to hopefully help with the itching. I pinned the towel at the front and back, and then used a tarp strap at the front to keep it from all sliding back around her hips. Maybe I will market them as spaying wound covers.
and
She has sure grown up a lot since showing up here in the middle of the night just 3 months and 10 days ago.
|
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| They make sprays for wounds, to deter licking. The sprays have anti-itch(lidocaine or the like) and a bitter taste to prevent licking. Good idea, Sue. If it works and doesn't bother her, then you did great! When pets get 'lick' granulomas on their paws, what is often done is, to wrap the oppoing paw with a bandage, and the pet will generally spend time chewing the bandage, and leaving the sore alone and giving it time to heal. RE: Let's talk here...

| Thanks Julie. I left her tied today for about 8 hours while I was away. When I got home, and stopped down at the mail box, she was standing at the top of the drive waiting to greet me. She has gotten off her snap once again...She is Houdini Ellie. The wound wrap was still in place good. I brought her in this eve, and checked her wound and put some antibiotic ointment on it, and covered it with a new wound cover (towel). She didn't seem to want to lick it much and was a lot more tolerant of the towel being pinned on her than what she was the first time... She 'was' like a squirming 2 year old getting a diaper change. I'm thinking I will take a pic of her in her wrap and an additional pic showing just the towel and the mini tarp strap, and seeing if the vet might like a picture of them, to either post, or to hand out to girl furbaby Moms and Dads. I could ask him too if he thought there 'might' be a market for a wound cover kit....a few towels and tarp straps, in different sizes for different sized furbabies. Ellie doesn't seem to mind it all all. Seems like it is a better alternative to an Elizabethan Collar s |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| E-collars are a problem mainly because most pets can't learn how to eat and drink with them on, but they do work in some cases if the correct size is used. Kt |
RE: Making lemonade from lemons
| | |
| I remember a cat I had once had to wear an e-collar and she didn't like it. Seems it would be hard to lay one's head down and be comfortable. A few years back I got the driveway blacktopped. There is a low spot near the carport that always puddles, and then turns into an ice rink in freezing temps. Ellie sure does enjoy the puddle though I've noticed, and I have also seen birds using it for a birdbath. I guess I'll just continue to enjoy the puddle as it is during the warmer seasons anyway. |

| Sue, Very smart protective covering you have invented for Ellie! I hope she is recovering nicely. Speaking of dogs, Taffy got herself into smelly trouble last night. We arrived home very late last night and were getting ready to turn in, letting Taffy out one last time. We got all the lights turned out, windows closed, locked, coffee pot set up for morning, etc. When I went to the back door to let Taffy in, I saw she was at the back door shaking her head, and sort of sneezing/coughing. Before I opened the door I sensed the unmistakable oror of skunk. She had been sprayed, for sure. Skunk odor on a dog is enough to make your eyes water...hers' too! It's a totally different smell than when you're driving through the country and catch a whiff through your vehicle's window. The odor (close up) actually smells like burning rubber. Here it is, 11:00 at night and I have a stinkin' dog and and a VERY irritated hubby uttering some very colorful language. Taffy was not out wandering the property, but rather was enclosed in our backyard fenced in (chain-link) area. We figure the skunk was just outside the fence area, Taffy must've ran toward it, scared it, and suffered the consequences. Anyway, my neighbor had brought over some fresh tomatoes just the day before, so we cut them up, took Taffy in the bathroom and rubbed her down with the juice from the freshly sliced tomatoes. (Neighbor says from experience that cut up tomatoes work much better than tomato juice does.) Poor Taffy was miserable...first the skunk spray, then being smothered in tomatoes, then the bath, which she also hates. I walked all over the house spraying Lysol, the only thing I could find in my cupboard to mask the offensive smell in the house. By golly, by this morning all the smell in the house was gone, and Taffy only had the slightest skunk odor, but only if you stuck your nose up to her nose...not bad at all. I still need to get out on the back porch where there is some dried foamy stuff that still smells bad and get that washed off. I know there is another home remedy for getting skunk smell out of a pet's fur. It's a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dish detergent, but never tried that, and I'm not sure how safe it is...surely can't store it for future use, since it's combustible.(sp?) I was a little concerned about her eyes, since she was blinking a lot last night. But today, right now in fact, she's outside happily chasing chipmunks, and the whites of hers eyes show with no redness. I hope she remembers to stay far away from any more skunks! Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Skunk...yes a common un-removable pet odor down here. Yes, the peroxide, baking soda, and liquid detergent work great, and I don't think it is at all combustible, but as with any deodorizing remedy, it needs to be used SOON after the pet is sprayed or rolls in the odor. The longer the skunk is left on the animal, the less you will be able to remove. Also, as you said, you never completely remove it, but make it tolerable except maybe when up close. Taffy will probably smell worse if she gets wet such as running in the morning dew, etc. The spray can burn pets eyes, so any type of petrolatum eye ointment, or even castor oil, will help soothe them. Skunks seen here in the daytime are usually a sign of rabies since skunks are normmally nocturnal. I hope Taffy is vaccinated. Oh, clothes-pins on your nose helps also. Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Taffy will probably smell worse if she gets wet such as running in the morning dew, etc. That is exactly what just happened about half an hour ago! I was out doing some garden cleanup while Taffy & BF Packer were racing around our yards, running in & out of the cabbage patch, getting muddy, in & out of the woods, getting wet and having a frolicking time. I just called her in and mentioned how the "smell" was back. ICK!! Well, maybe another bath for her tonight, both to get the dirt off, and to mask the Eau de skunk. Oh yes indeed she is vaccinated, Kt. I'm good about keeping her shots up to date. Clothes-pins on my nose.....Ha! Very funny Mr. Vet! Thanks for the added advise! Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| How long did it take you to bath and get most of the smell of of her last night? I'd have been temped to have just thrown her an old rug or blanket outside, if there was shelter for her to be dry. Where does she sleep at night? That's one nice things about my doggies being pretty well outside dogs most all of the time. I do however have Sadie (porch dog) inside now though as it is thundering and she gets terrified. Kiley and little Ellie are tied because I had some company earlier, that plus neither one came to me when called earlier in the eve. I guess I really need to spend some time working with them, getting them to come when called.,,,sigh |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
How long did it take you to bath and get most of the smell of of her last night? I'd guess about 30 minutes. As Kt mentioned above, The longer the skunk (smell) is left on the animal, the less you will be able to remove. If we would have left her outside all last night, the skunk odor (oil) would have penetrated her fur and skin more deeply and would have been harder to get out. Besides, she would have been cold if left outside last night. She's an inside dog and has her own couch for sleeping...spoiled rotten! Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
She's an inside dog and has her own couch for sleeping...spoiled rotten! All of mine like to come in, but usually only for a short while. Ellie especially doesn't seem to want to stay in for very long, once I give her some attention, change her wrap, and give her some milk. I always ask them if they want to go out, and seldom ever tell them they need to go out. Usually when I ask, their ears perk up, and when I stand up, they head toward the door, turning back to see if I am following them. That Ellie is a pill. She thinks she can come in any time she stands at the door barking. Well it is just not gonna happen, especially with it being wet out. I'm planning/hoping sometime later to have some sort of big tiles put in the back entry, utility room/hall, galley kitchen and the small dining room/area. That way they can all come in with no worry about dirty carpets. I think it would be easy to keep the tile swept and wiped up once in a while. Do you have carpets you try and keep clean with Taffy? BF Packer is just her playmate, right? |
RE: Let's talk here...

| I like the outdoors better than the indoors also. If it weren't for the mosquitos and cold weather...I'd stay outside all the time, or have an 'open' house. Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...

I like the outdoors better than the indoors also. That's why I'm often sitting here at the desk, with the front door (8'away) open even if it is in the fifties outside. What's the normal average low for your zone 8b? s |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
That Ellie is a pill. She thinks she can come in any time she stands at the door barking. Our first three dogs barked and barked and barked to come in, just like your Ellie, but Taffy won't bark to come in, but rather scratches and stands up on her two back feet to peek in. BF Packer (neighbor's dog) has learned from watching her to also scratch at the door, normally when I just get home for work. I give them both a milkbone and send them both off to play. Good thing the door isn't made of wood! We haven't been successful in trying to teach Taffy to "speak" yet. She sure does bark at strangers though, and thunder, and whatever is out there in the dark. My carpeting needs shampooing badly, not only from the dog(s), but DH and the grandkids, who tend to run through the house from outside, forgetting to wipe their feet or take off their shoes. I've been waiting for a day that is not so humid. Might wait until we can turn on the furnace during the cold weather, so the carpet will dry quickly. If it weren't for the mosquitos and cold weather...I'd stay outside all the time... I believe it! I wouldn't mind that kind of life either, if I lived in a warmer state. I bet you'd like living in a Bamboo hut! Julie |

| Winters lows on average get down into the 20's about 2 to 4 times a year. Sometimes the nighttime temps get down into the teens, but rarely below 15F. Days almost always get above freezing, and usually into the upper 50's to low 70's. Just before cold fronts blow in, the temps can get into the 80's, then drop quickly to below freezing at night. No steady temps here during the Winter. Short sleeves one day, coats the next. So, having said all of that, the average lows are from about 28F to 38F...for the most part, but as I mentioned, the lows can be even up into the 70's sometimes. Confused?? Kt |

Kt, You are so lucky to be able to enjoy your plants outside for many more months than we Northerners. What do you think of the idea of posting our weather stickers on this side? Do you think all the regulars would see them over here?" Sandy, I hear ya, and don't blame you. It seems you've had colder temps than we've had lately, at least during the nighttime hours. So far our house has only gotten down to the mid 60's at night w/o the furnace running, even though the outside temps are in the 40's We have good insulation, and on sunny days, the second floor soaks up the sunlight through three skylights. We usually give in my mid October. Julie |

We're supposed to drop to 59F on Friday! That's comfortable weather here. Fun to play in, fun to garden in, great to sleep in! Why does sometimes the titles come out in lower case even though I type them in upper case? Don't know why, but I've noticed that often happens to me, too. Mystery. J |

RE: Let's talk here...

RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Why does sometimes the titles come out... Honestly, I didn't even notice the "error" until you drew attention to it. All I can figure is that I often skim through a person's posting, and if there's a small/slight error, my brain must automatically "fix it" before I recognize anything's wrong. I am also used to reading children's writing, and can decipher just about anything. What kills me is the writing of some of those children's parents!!! What kills me even more is how some people can get jobs with the poor way they write and spell (to fill out job applications, for example.) Julie, who can reads just fines. |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| ...my brain must automatically "fix it" before I recognize anything's wrong. Kind of like a spellcheck inside your head. Yes, I agree about adults who fill out job applications. We have been getting several requests for applications at work, and I will always give them out. However, if an application has bad grammar or misspelled words, I won't hire them. We get about one application out of 20 that is error-free. Some are just so messy, or the handwriting is so bad that they aren't worth a second look. Some people have no pride, I guess. I was raised to do EVERYTHING to the best of my ability...I guess we were different... Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| I was raised to do EVERYTHING to the best of my ability...I guess we were different... That is a rare trait now-a-days. Too many children that want to try a new hobby/sport/activity give up too early and quit before the session or season is over. Worse than that, the parents LET them quit, without giving them encouragement and support. We need more parents teaching their children about commitment and following through, even when the going gets occasionally tough. I see older children and young adults find good beginning jobs, then quit or get fired because they can't get to work on time, or don't show up at all. Some hop from job to job looking for "better" hours to fit in with their fun-time schedules. There are so many people (here, anyway) who feel the world "owes" them...or they're "entitled" to free this or that, without lifting a finger. I'm getting so sick of seeing children growing up with that attitude just because their parents are lazy! I could tell you many stories of instances in my work places where certain families feel they should receive "free" opportunities while the honest hard working family has to pay a fee for the same opportunity! I even have "bosses" that feel I should go out of my way to provide for these "needy" children. Oh, gosh now you got me going! I'd better stop before I get so riled up that I can't sleep. Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Well, some might be lack of pride. But many also don't really know it's wrong. They've been graded on effort and not achievement. I did learn a different perspective though taking some classes as an adult. Summer class--Business Communications I think. Fast paced, churning out at least one assignment/paper nightly. Typed. On typewriters! Ate up my evenings that summer, (crap typewriter) but content, spelling, grammar wasn't (LOL. weren't) a problem for me. Papers were handed back next day marked, with comments and able to be re-submitted as many times as necessary to get it right. Young black gal next to me asked me for some help. She had major problems. The way she was used to speaking and pronouncing things put her at a big disadvantage. Couldn't say them that way on paper and sure couldn't spell them that way. It was sad. She was a nice gal and really trying her best but... |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Jule, I agree with everything you said! You too, Sandy,...and I give great credit to those who try hard but yet have a difficult time being correct. It's the people who 'can' do better but just don't care that I won't hire. If I see a resume where the words "Graduated Cum Laude" are stressed on it...I will not hire them either. I found out a long time ago that they make the worst employees, usually lazy and no common sense. Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
Sandy, ...They've been graded on effort and not achievement. Unfortunately standards are being lowered just to push students through to the next grade/level. For example, I found a very very old Practice card in a file drawer at one of the buildings where I work. To receive an "A", a student had to practice 180 minutes/week. I would guess the card was printed back in the 70's. Now practice cards list 120 minutes as an "A" grade. Standards of excellence in some foreign countries are much higher than here in the U.S... scary! Kt, ...that I won't hire. Wow, you must have a highly prestigious position, if YOU do the hiring! I have never been in that type of position, but DH and his brother do hiring and firing on a regular basis. Both my son and daughter have been in "manager" type positions where they have also hired and fired people. You have to be a good judge of character to be able to "feel people out" (besides just looking at all the facts on their applications...which may or may not be true.) Firing a person in DH's line of work is a long drawn out process if the employee has worked for a good number of years...but that's another long story and I won't go into a lengthy explanation about it here. You may have gone through that process, Kt, and it's no fun. ..."Graduated Cum Laude"...usually lazy and no common sense." Yes, I agree, simply because those kind don't have the know-how to deal well with the common public/customers. Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| I have rarely 'fired' anyone outright, and it's never a pleasant situtation. There are ways to go about it though, that keep me out of the repecussions like unemployment etc. I will give them a set of rules and regulations to be followed, and have them read and sign it. If they don't follow those written rules of work...after their third mess-up(usually more) they have to quit, of their own accord. In some cases, I will reduce their hours to nearly nothing and they eventually quit and move on. No one likes to have their hours cut, or worse, take a cut in hourly pay. I think I'm a pretty good judge of character after meeting someone and talking to them for a while. A wide range of conversation, including current national and worldwide events is a good tool for determining character. I also still think I'm right about our president...I just can't believe there are so many out there that are fooled by him(just my opinion). I don't hold it against someone for their personal beliefs, just as I hope they don't hold it against me for mine. Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Yes, the "unemployment" issue is a big one. Even if an employee commits a crime such as stealing from the company, so many steps have to be taken, and paperwork, and investigations...on and on. I think I'm a pretty good judge of character after meeting someone and talking to them for a while. A wide range of conversation, including current national and worldwide events is a good tool for determining character. Yes, I've always thought of you as a well-rounded "people person." You have a special "knack" for being able to converse with different people (who have a wide variety of personalities) about almost any subject under the sun! You also have the ability to get them to "open up" without making them feel uncomfortable. You also speak the truth....well, except when you're kidding of course. You are also quick to give good advise, in a tactful way when dealing with a sensitive person. You are also quick to give advise in a strong/stern/warning way when dealing with an idiot. (Am I a good judge of YOUR character?) Julie |

| (Am I a good judge of YOUR character?) Yes, I would say that you read me pretty well. Just remember, almost everyone appears 'normal' until you get to know them. Well, I guess I look at people differently. I tend to look at people as being abnormal(or not normal) until they prove to me that they 'are' normal. Maybe that's why I am a good judge of character...I don't assume anything and there are no 'givens'. Kt |

| Little agaves sprouting on my back porch. That huge agave that I posted a pic of a while back had hundreds of seeds, but at close inspection, they appeared dried and hollow(which they should be to some extent) and not viable. I've never seen any that small. Most agave specie seeds are much larger. I had a few dozen seed pods, each filled with about 100 seeds in a boot box on my back porch. The rain got some of them to sprout. Never grew agaves from seed. I wish I would have collected more now that I see they were viable. Kt...just talking. |
RE: Let's talk here...

| Read This...Some of you may really like this...and some may not. Freedom to choose, that's what's great about this country...or was great about it. (Oh, BTW, the USA is the 13th best country to live in...) This is one of the best explanations of why God allows pain and suffering that I have seen.... A man went to a barbershop to have his hair cut and his beard trimmed. As the barber began to work, they began to have a good conversation. They talked about so many things and various subjects. When they eventually touched on the subject of God, the barber said: 'I don't believe that God exists.' 'Why do you say that?' asked the customer. 'Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that God doesn't exist. Tell me, if God exists, would there be so many sick people? Would there be abandoned children? If God existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. I can't imagine a loving God who would allow all of these things.' The customer thought for a moment, but didn't respond because he didn't want to start an argument. The barber finished his job and the customer left the shop. Just after he left the barbershop, he saw a man in the street with long, stringy, dirty hair and an untrimmed beard. He looked dirty and unkept. The customer turned back and entered the barber shop again and he said to the barber: 'You know what? Barbers do not exist.' 'How can you say that?' asked the surprised barber. 'I am here, and I am a barber. And I just worked on you!' 'No!' the customer exclaimed. 'Barbers don't exist because if they did, there would be no people with dirty long hair and untrimmed beards, like that man outside.' 'Ah, but barbers DO exist! That's what happens when people do not come to me.' 'Exactly!' affirmed the customer. 'That's the point! God, too, DOES exist! That's what happens when people do not go to Him and don't look to Him for help. That's why there's so much pain and suffering in the world.' |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Well, Kt, I sure liked reading that explanation. God can and will get us through the difficulties, only if we call on Him. (Oh, BTW, the USA is the 13th best country to live in...) So what are the first twelve? Oh, and what are you going to do with all those sprouting Agave seeds? Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| I never believe everything I read...Click Here. Oh, and what are you going to do with all those sprouting Agave seeds? I took about seven or so and put them all in one pot...interesting looking little plants. I brought most of the rest of the seeds out to the country and scattered them in a small open area. I will have to go look at the plant and see if there are any seeds left on the stalk. I only cut about 1/20th of the seeds off from the stalk, so there may be some there yet. Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| That's why there's so much pain and suffering in the world.' " I must be misunderstanding this. Are you saying that people(both individually and globally) suffering and in pain have not come to God for help? |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| I'm not saying anything...I'm simply relaying this explanation and leave it to the reader to interpret it in the manner they wish. Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| At the risk of commenting on a "Hot Topic", I'm going to throw in my two cents here. There was, is, and will be pain and suffering on the earth ever since "Man" screwed up in the Garden of Eden. God is allowing the pain and suffering to go on, because He gave man a free will. He doesn't want robots. God isn't going to clean up this Earth (from all its pain and suffering) until certain future events happen (according to His plan)...and I won't even discuss that here. But while pain and suffering continue, those who call on God will be given whatever they need (peace, guidance, relief...whatever...since He is a personal God,) to get through trials and tribulations. A person may not be taken out of a difficult situation/event/sickness, but that person who calls on God will be able to endure whatever test he is going through. For example, the dude on the street with the dirty, long, stringy hair and untrimmed beard may be a homeless man. If he turns to the Barber, the Barber may give him just what he needs (not necessarily a home, but maybe a shave and a haricut - two bits,) to apply for a job, to make enough money to get a place to stay, etc. There would most likely be less pain and suffering if more people would turn to God, but, (IMHO) I think less and less people are doing that these days, and instead are "Lovers of themselves", and either suffering the consequences of their corrupt behavior, or unsuccessfully trying to solve their own problems w/o consulting God first. I'm sure I've said too much already. But that's what I got out of the "Barber" story. I'm also sure every person that reads Kt's post will have a different personal opinion. Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Wow! Jule, that is a perfect explanation of the barber story above...at least in my opinion. As you said everyone will have a different interpretation of the story, and to each his/her own, and I'm not stressing your(my) view, but that is a great point and I'm sure that is the point of the original author. OK...so now I gues that I am saying something... Kt |

| Hey Julie...I'm sharing several of your Red Rascals with daff loving friends. I asked my local friend Helen Trueblood who has been a collector all of her life and well known in the Daff community nationwide, if she had RR and she said she didn't. I'm sharing 3 nice bulbs with her, though she said 1 would be fine. Heck...she is 90, maybe I should share 5 double nosed ones so she will have a nice clump next spring. I'm also taking some for the swap table at the Daff meeting this Sat. I was told 1 double nosed bulb would be fine per trade....or 3 smaller ones if I wanted to do that. I can't wait to see what all I'll get from both the swap table, and from club awards for being active and volunteering. My Mitsch's order is due in sometime after the 15th of Oct. Are you familiar with them? They only have a few listed on line for sale, but there are lots more in their hard copy catalog. Check out the Garden Daffs available and The Exhibition daffs I've got several of them ordered from the links above...most excited about Hawaiian Skies. Have you ever seen a daff any gaudier than Spanish Fiesta? I got that last fall at the daff meeting for being a new member. I was clueless in picking something. Sue |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Hi Sue, Wow, I'm impressed that your 90-yr-old friend still gardens! I hope I can still garden if I live that long! I'm glad you can use some of the Red Rascals for trading, especially since they're hard to find. Must be an older variety. I'm not familiar with Mitsch's, but they sure have some beauties on their website...pricey though! Are those that are most expensive newer cultivars that are available only in limited quantities? 'Hawaiian Skies' also caught my eye, and I also liked 'Young Love', 'Fire Drill' and 'Spanish Fiesta'. Yes, 'Spanish Fiesta' is gaudy, but I like bright splashes of color in early Spring to wake me up after the long, cold, dreary gray skies of Winter. Let me know what you get from the swap table, and what awards you get! Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Yes and no on the pricing. I see in the catalog one that was registered in 200 listed for $5. 2002 for $10 2002 for $15 The prices for several released in 2008 in Australia range from $16 to $52. Here's my order from them. Several are pictured on those links. Anvil Chorus Cedar Hills Clavichord Emerald Empire Greek Column Harpsichord Hawaiian Skies Hot Gossip Integer Limequilla Mission Bells Night Hawk Oxford Pacific Rim-Won best of show at the southern IN show this year Pink China Scarlet Tanager Shockwave Spring Sensation Trigonometry Verdant Meadow Young Love Oh yes, Helen gardens, provides her church with new arrangements all the time, fresh when available. There is a covered bridge near her house, and she plants and maintains 2 barrels (whiskey) on each end with something in bloom all season, and carries water to them when needed. She belongs to Master Gardeners, Hosta Society, Daylily Society, Daff Soc in both IN and KY, an Herb Soc, and a Garden Club. She also cooks food for funeral dinners. She amazes me. She manages to keep her house in order, and pretty clean as far as I could tell (wasn't really looking, but didn't 'notice' dirt anywhere). Until this year she maintained all of her beds by herself. This year a master gardener has been helping her to earn her hours, as Helen's gardens are more public gardens that what you would call private. They are open to the public about all the time in the spring when the daffs are in bloom. Aint I the wordy one tonight? Sue |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Well, you certainly will be busy planting this Fall when that order arrives! I look forward to when I retire and I can spend quality hours in the garden way up into the Fall months. My gardens need so much clean-up this time of year, and all I can do some days is one hour after work...nothing on rainy days. This evening I was mowing with the tractor's headlights on! I will have to work HARD to keep myself healthy and keep my muscles stretched (toned) in order to last into my 90's! What a gal that Helen is! Looking forward to seeing many of your Daff blooms posted here next Spring! Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| That is a small order compared to what all I bought from the IN Daff Soc. I also had 2 smallish orders (like the one above) from other places. A Daff crazed GW cyber friend sent me a list of daffs someone has from her club has for sale....$5 each. There were over 60 cultivars on it and somehow I was able to narrow my order to just 26 varieties. Have not heard back on how much of that is available. It is first come, first served. S Hey...it has been over 3 hours now that things have stayed clean. before that I just knocked 2 off. Could it be they are maybe moving on? Hope so. |

Hey...it has been over 3 hours now that things have stayed clean. before that I just knocked 2 off. Could it be they are maybe moving on? Hope so. Not sure what you're talkin' about, but maybe the spammers on the "other side?" The nice thing about daffs is that they're so darn hardy, and they're guaranteed to multiply. When I first started buying mixed varieties to plant in a woodland setting, I planted groups of mixed daffs in clumps, and I wish I had never done that, because they bloom at different times. Sometimes only two or three bloom, then later a couple more, and sometimes one at a time...looks silly. The only way a mixed variety would look great (IMHO) is if you'd plant several hundred in a mass planting somewhere, that way many of the same cultivar would all be blooming at the same time, giving a fuller look. I'm sure there are places planted like that, with early, mid and late blooming varieties, giving a spectacular long spring show. What kind of labels do you use to mark the positions of all your daff bulbs? Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Took this pic out my front door. Deer are coming in my yard to eat the acorns that drop at this time of the year. Each tree drops several hundred pounds of acorns. The dark canna is the 'mother' plant to the green-leaved canna at the bottom. It is the one that I cross-pollinated, but it hasn't bloomed yet.

RE: Let's talk here...

| I don't see anywhere that Bob has posted for 2 or more months now. Maybe him and Mikie won the lottery together and split for greener pastures. Mikie posted as late as August. Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| What a cool pic, Kt! Right out your front door!?!?? The deer sure looks close...unless that's a cropped picture. Your grass is sure showing a beautiful GREEN color! You must be getting plenty of rain now. It's so strange to see the beautiful Canna foliage, as if it were the middle of summer. Everything up here is turning brown, orange, red, gold and yellow because of the cool night temps. Only the hardiest plants still show green. The anticipation of waiting for your baby Canna to bloom must be exciting! How old is the baby, anyway? When I cross daylilies, it takes two or three years before the seedlings reach blooming size. I have been meaning to e-mail Bob to see if he is O.K., but haven't done so yet, because I don't want to sound "nosey". Maybe I'll give it another couple of weeks and try to contact him. The "other side" of this forum is getting downright discouraging to post on, since it's mostly spammers lately, and anything you post to carry on a conversation is lost in a matter of a couple of hours. I'm glad this side is safe. J |
RE: Let's talk here...

| Picture is not cropped, but it is at full zoom which is why it is a bit blurry. The canna was inside my backyard, but wasn't doing well, so I moved it this past Spring to it's present location. It sprouted late last year. It got eaten down by a deer after I first planted it, then a limb fell out of the tree and flattened it and an armadillo was constantly trying to dig it up back when it was dry, but now it seems to finally be coming on. The 'Mother' plant is leaning from a storm that came through yesterday. I need to mow around the plants. Kt |

I have been meaning to e-mail Bob to see if he is O.K., but haven't done so yet, because I don't want to sound "nosey". Maybe I'll give it another couple of weeks and try to contact him. I think the last post at CH was about Sept 18th. He has been known to have family in, or go visiting, and disappear for a while. I wonder if his special 'great-grand' might be visiting, or if he is visiting her. Remembering the Beach Bum The "other side" of this forum is getting downright discouraging to post on, since it's mostly spammers lately, and anything you post to carry on a conversation is lost in a matter of a couple of hours. I used the Contact Us link and asked if the Test Forum could be made for members only, citing that there has been some very awful spam with porn links, which is so disgusting. I told them I don't know of any other forum anywhere that one can post without being registered and signed in. You can read a lot of other forums, but just can't post. Hopefully they will consider getting the TF set up that way. I do know it takes a long time for things to happen here though, but hopefully they will get to it in time. |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Yes, the thought of Bob visiting, or having family in has crossed my mind. He's very close with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Good idea, Sue, mentioning to the "Powers That Be" about the offensive porn links. Maybe it would be a good idea if a few more of us also use the "Contact Us" link and request the same. If more of us submit requests, maybe they will consider making the change to registering before being able to post. Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| I just sent a message to the "Contact Us" link and suggested the same thing as you, Sue, but worded a little differently. J |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| I did that some time ago, including links to the porn, but never heard back. I'd sure be cautious about a site with that on the test forum. That's what stopped me from downloading CCleaner for a long time. Just couldn't believe a site with a name like that could really be OK. LOL I've been concerned about Bob, too. Not posting here is one thing but not posting anywhere...Mikie, too. |
RE: Let's talk here...

| I thought this was interesting, that is, for any do-it-yourselfers out there. A larger one(8 feet or larger) with sealed entrance openings channeling the air directly through the cans would give much more heat. Kt |

RE: Let's talk here...

| I guess I still don't understand spammers. I guess they make money, somehow, from posting those websites, but why don't they post it among writing that is readable instead of just letters?...and why aren't the titles catchy such as "Take a look at this!" instead of "NOJoiNuHJKjkN"? Kn |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Maybe the spammer that post here is only one person, since the titles are always "NOJoiNuHJKjkN". Why would spammers ALL use a random selection of letters with random caps and small letters mixed? Is it a code? If you want someone to read your post, why not title it, "Look Here!" or "You,ve Got To See This!"? What's the deal? |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Mosquitoes are terrible here! Am I talking to myself again?....hmmmmm. Anyway, temps are back up to 90F with very high humidity. Recent rains and now the onset of grass, which was lacking all Summer, give the mosquitoes a great hiding place and breeding grounds. I can't even go outside during the heat of the day, without getting covered in mosquitoes. I finally sprayed my yard yesterday so that I could at least get to water my plants, but outside the yard, even in the open pasture, they are viscious. Stuck inside for now. Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...

| Are you standing in front of a mirror? ;-) Spammers: maybe copy and paste with a sense of humor? NOJoi |
RE: Let's talk here...

RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Kt, Are you off work this week? (from your day job, I mean.) Seems your IP addy is from your home area a lot lately. I know how you feel about the mosquitoes. They were awful during the summer months, and I had to spray myself with Deep Woods Off, wear long pants, and even spray my clothes if I wanted to get any outside work done. Heading to a Retirement Info meeting tonight. Scary final decisions to be made, but it's TIME. Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| I like the spray put out by Cutter, called Skinsations with Aloe and Vitamin E. It works better than Deep Woods Off(at least here). Maybe the mosquitoes are immune/resistant to the Deep Woods Off...don't know. It's comes in a pump spray bottle. You are quite the detective here lately. Yes, I am off until two Mondays from now. I will have to go into work tomorrow for a while and maybe even a few times next week to do paperwork, but at my own leisure. Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| I just thought you've been posting a lot more than usual, so it seemed like you were not at your day job location. I guess you have to take the good with the bad...lots of rain with lots of mosquitoes! Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Yep, not supposed to do much anyway. A cold front blew in a couple of hours ago and blew out some of the humidity and heat...and some of the mosquitoes. Feels great outside now, but unfortunately too dark to do anything. Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Yep, not supposed to do much anyway. Well, Kt, I WASN'T going to ask, for fear of sounding nosey, but now you've really got me curious, so...... At the risk of sounding NOSEY, are you O.K.? Almost sounds like you may have injured yourself, or your bad knee took a turn for the worse, or you had some surgery of some sort....? Take care of yourself no matter what! Julie, being nosey... |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Heh...Well, sometimes I talk too much about myself.LOL. My knee is also healing, along with my shoulder, but I'm afraid that NOT using my knee is also giving it a chance to weaken and raises the chances of me hurting it again. Those were the least of my problems. Thanks for your concern. Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Wishing you a speedy recovery, whatever malady (ies) you have! Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Thanks. I had surgery last Friday so I took the next two weeks left of my vacation time, to heal up. Heck of a way to spend my vacation after looking forward to it all year, but at least I know that I'll be up and round and back to my old self soon enough. Finally got out today and enjoyed the outside, the mosquitoes apparently don't like this beautiful weather as much I do. Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Surgery...well, that explains it then...stuck at home. I was out of work for six weeks once after a surgery in 2002. Well, too bad you had to use your vacation time for recovery, but at least you can get out a little bit at a time and enjoy some nice weather this time of the year, instead of during the sweltering triple digits of mid-summer! Maybe you could take some photos while you're recovering, providing you don't have to go treking through the countryside too much. I'd enjoy seeing more of your pics, if you're able;) Are you able to strum some tunes on your guitar? Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| I had to watch how I held my guitar the first few days, so I didn't play any, but I am now(starting yesterday) learning a simple version of 'Constant Sorrow' as played/sung by Soggy Bottom Boys. Thanks for your comments on my pics, but yours have been so much better to look at. They are sooo clear and crisp. I've been wanting to get a new camera, one with a better lens but that's something else I've been putting off...like going to the doctor. I've been awfully lucky. This is actually the first time in my life that I can actually say that I needed to go to the doctor, other times were to please everyone else, and my mind to some degree, but never had problems. I remember reading a few years ago about a 90 something year old man who never ever went to see a doctor...never needed to. I was hoping I could at least say that I didn't really need a doctor until I was that age, but didn't make it.:) Oh, well, as long as we can be 'fixed' I guess that's what counts. A patch here, a pill there... Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Well, thanks for your comments on my pics, Kt, but I haven't practiced like I promised myself I would this past Summer...so much garden projects got in the way! I have been trying to play my guitar...all sorts of songs, sometimes sight-reading very simple stuff to build up my finger strength, technique, and speed...about an hour every night. My left hand is getting stronger and both hands are developing better dexterity. But I lack in the stretching ability I used to have when I was younger. I wasn't familiar with 'Constant Sorrow', so I googled and found 'I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow'. Is that the one you're talking about? That sure is a silly video, but the song seems easy enough to learn just by listening. I couldn't understand all the words, (that southern drawl thing) so I googled the lyrics to read while listening/watching the video. Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| I couldn't understand all the words... LOL. That always amuses me that you can't understand that, what you call southern drawl. No accent to me. You would probably have hard time understanding me. People tell me that I talk like a Cajun, and often ask if I'm from Louisiana. I guess we 'are' different talking if you say so. We get used to it I guess. Yes, that's the song I'm talking about. After looking on YouTube, I found one very close to the way I am learning it, but you have to watch the whole video...the beginning starts out with the basics, then adds notes about 1/3 of the way through the video. Constant Sorrow But I lack in the stretching ability I used to have when I was younger. You'll loosen-up and get your dexterity back. I never thought I would ever do as good as I am now...just wish I had time for more intense practicing. Wow, an hour every night!? I do good if I get in 15 minutes lately. An hour every night might be what I need...someday... Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| I just watched your link to the cool 'Constant Sorrow' Guitar Lesson, Kt. I sure do like the blues lick between the D chords with the bending on the A string. Special effects, like hammering, pull-offs, bending, sliding, and trills are fun to throw in between lyrics. I just tried the lick and have a little trouble with the bending on the A string because my second finger isn't quite long enough to get a decent bend (pull.) But then, I was trying it on my classical guitar, which has a wider neck. I'll try it again tonight (if I have time) on my acoustic (steel string) with its narrower neck. One thing I can't do is use my left thumb on the bass strings like you guys can, because my hand simply isn't big enough to wrap my thumb around the back of the neck to reach the 6th string. I noticed he does that a few times in the video. Have fun with that song, Kt, but I certainly hope you don't have constant sorrows! Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Hehe...No, no constant sorrows. Always try to remain cheerful, looking at the bright side. I use my thumb sometimes, but not in Constant Sorrows, even the way it's played above. I like the song since I can halfway sing it also. Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
Just played my Gibson steel acoustic, and the blues-type lick was much easier to play. I was able to bend the A string with ease, because the strings are light guage, and they're closer to the fingerboard than those on my classical guitar. I also got out a song I had started last year, but gave up on (last Winter,) because it was too hard. I decided to tackle it again, and learn it slow, letting the speed come later. It's call Young Thing by Chet Atkins. I need to cut my nails again! (Left hand, that is.) I like the song since I can halfway sing it also. I wouldn't even attempt to sing 'Constant Sorrow.' (Too many extra vowels y'all Southerners put in those words!) Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| (Too many extra vowels y'all Southerners put in those words!) Maybe that's why I can sing it.:) Young Thing by Chet Atkins. That's a very cool song! But, not sure if I could ever master that one. Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Ya, I'm sure you can sing 'Constant Sorrow' with ease (with your Suthe'n draaaawwwwwwwl!) Click If you listened to 'Young Thing' on YouTube, imagine it about ten times slower and that's about the right speed I'm playing. It's about six pages long, and I'm only half way through the first page, which is ONLY the introduction to the song. Mine sounds more like a slow Boogie;) Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Suthe'n draaaawwwwwwwl...maybe that's why I'm so popular when I travel up north...they like to hear me talk!? Say What?? Yep, even ten times slower would be too fast for me. I bet you are learning it just fine. You should post a sound recording of some of the tunes you play someday. Kt |
RE: Let's talk here...

| I saw Sling Blade for the first time yesterday. Set in rural Arkansas. I might have understood maybe a little more than half the actual dialog. Still a good movie, and I didn't need to hear the words to know what was going on--woulda been nice though. |
RE: Let's talk here...
| | |
| Never heard of Sling Blade, had to look it up to see what it was about. Sling Blade No problem understanding any talk in that...maybe the movie had some real accents that were more hard to understand. Kt |

| Sling Blade... Sandy, if you understood more than half the dialog of the movie, then you understood more than I could, just watching the YouTube link that Kt provided! After reading the Sling Blade article in Wikipedia, I think I'd like to rent the DVD. Looks like there are some good actors featured. Ring of Fire Julie |

| Check out the library iffn yor interstid. LOL!!! Sounds like some of that Arkansas drawl has rubbed off on you! I keep fergittin' 'bout the local library fer rentin' DVD's...maybe this winter iffn I'm stuck inside here. Julie |
RE: Let's talk here...
