RE: weather

Thanks for posting the weather stickers here, Kt!
I bet this thread could easily last for a year here, being safe from the spammers.

It will be interesting to see who will suffer the first frost. We missed it last night, but there's a possibility again tonight.

Happy early Fall, everyone!

Julie

RE: weather

You are welcome.

I'm 10 degrees warmer than Mikie, and almost 40 degrees hotter than Bernie...I wonder if he has a golfball warmer?

Kt

RE: weather

We had our first frost here this morning. When I woke up and looked at the temp gauge, it was at 29.5º. Then at about 5 minutes before the sunrise, it was 28º. Walking the dog shortly after that it was chilly out there.

I'm 10 degrees warmer than Mikie, and almost 40 degrees hotter than Bernie...I wonder if he has a golfball warmer?

I just use two golfballs. One is in my pocket and one that I play with. On the next hole I switch golfballs.

Bernie

 o
RE: weather

Wow, Bernie!
Frozen golfballs, for sure, at 28°!

I finally broke down and turned on the furnace to break the chill, just like Sandy did. Cloud cover blocked the sun most of the day, and right now it's drizzling, so the dampness creeps into my bones.

Furnace is set at 66°...and I'm comfortable in capris, a short sleeve shirt, and sandals.

Julie

 o
RE: weather

It's 84F here. Might need something to cool down my golf balls.

A/C still working overtime...

Kt

 o
RE: weather

Almost the same here as KT. 84 there, 48 here and wet. I heard a forecast for 70 over the weekend, but it takes so long to get up there, it stays cool in the house.

You're a hearty soul, Julie. Our furnace is on 66 and I'm in sweatpants, a long sleeved cotton shirt and a light sweatshirt. Hate starting the heating season so early.

RE: weather

Sandy,
Our house (being originally very old, built in 1920, but remodeled before we bought it,) has a few "micro" climates.
The kitchen holds heat very well whenever I use the stove/oven. Right now the kitchen temp is 73°. Living room (where the thermostat is located,) is about 69°.
Heat doesn't travel up to the second floor very well, and it's always 4-6° colder up there in Fall, Winter, and early Spring. It's prob'ly around 65° up there right now...great for sleeping.
Unfortunately the upstairs is also 4-6° hotter in the Summer:(

Julie

 o
RE: weather

Guess that's why I'm in sweatpants, etc. Computer is upstairs in a spare bedroom that has become the computer room. Now that you say that, I made a roast in the oven and lots on the stove tonight which makes the thermostat (DR sharing wall with kitchen) think its warm in here! I forgot about that.

 o
RE: weather

It's raining!!

 o
RE: weather

Yes, I see it's raining in Texas, also in MI!

Rain and 72° is much easier to take than rain and 50°.

We had just enough drizzle here today to keep me inside:(

Julie

 o
RE: weather

Drizzle almost never keeps me inside...only heavy and constant rain. Too much work to do.:(

RE: weather

Enjoyed a couple of hours working in the sunny, chilly Fall air, doing garden clean-up. Such a relaxing way to spend time after work (day job).

Julie, bumping this up a bit...

 o
RE: weather

Brrrrrrrrrrrr

 o
RE: weather

Temps are dropping fast...a low of 29° predicted tonight.
There goes the garden.
My potted annuals will be suitable for the compost pile, I'm sure.
Bundled up in a hooded sweatshirt under a hooded lined jacket this aft and mowed some grass...how invigorating!

Julie

 o
RE: weather

That's crazy! Temps here are even colder than usual...57F now. Hard to believe it's that cold up there.

Kt

 o
RE: weather

Average high for SE WI for Oct is 59°, average low is 44°.
So yes, we are well below average for this time of year.
It feels more like Nov.
I put all my summer clothes away in my cedar chest. Now watch...we'll get some warm days where I'll have to dig out those short sleeve shirts again!

I bet your 57° temps feel a lot better than those three digit temps!

J

 o
RE: weather

Yes, much better than triple digits.

I never put away my Summer clothes since Summer never goes completely away. 70's and even low 80's can be normal for a day or so during the Winter months.

Kt

 o
RE: weather

26º at 7:30am this cold Sunday morning. At 9:30 the white frost on the grass is starting to melt because of the sun. Sounds like cooler than normal temps for the next 7-8 days. I will have to admit that I don't mind it. I like to see 4 different seasons.

Take care, Bernie

 o
RE: weather

Wow, Bernie. I don't expect temps in the 20's until at least December...maybe January.

Planning on moving my plants into my greenhouses in a couple of months.

Kt

RE: weather

The sun occasionally peeks through the clouds, which warms my spirit.
Fall colors are awesome this time of year.
But we may have to wait for a week before we see a fully sunny day.

Julie

 o
RE: weather

It's going to rain here a lot in the next 36 to 40 hours. Tv weatherman says we will get between 1 and 2 inches of rain. I'll take that. If it was snow, we would be looking at 12+ inches of that white stuff. Looks like the tricker treaters will just miss most of the rain but it should be windy and in the low to mid 40's. Not a good night to be outside.

Take care, Bernie

 o
RE: w eather

WOW!!!!!!!!!! Did we get some rain and wind. Officially we got 2.85 inches of rain but there are reports of 3.25 inches in the surrounding area. And it was windy. A steady 25 mph with gusts to 40. With all of that rain and wind, it sure did a number to all of our colorful leaves. You look outside now and all that you see is bare trees except for the oak trees. If you didn't go on a fall color tour, you missed it.

Take care, Bernie

 o
RE: weather

Is that a lot of rain to get at one time in your area?

Also, is that considered windy?

Kt

 o
RE: weather

It is in this area, though not especially extreme. All the leaves are off the trees here too. Nice to have them off before the snow so we can get to them though. Now it would be nice for them to dry out so we can rake, mow or blow/vac.

Looked outside today at rain and trees swaying and was sure we wouldn't get many trick or treaters so didn't go out for extras as I'd planned. Hey, I didn't want to go out in it either. We get 22 in a good year and last year only 12, according to the list I've been keeping in my plastic pumpkin. I had a box of 45 cheese/peanut butter crackers and let it go at that.

I was swamped by big groups of big kids. Must have been neighborhood parties. Didn't/don't know any around here anymore. Used what I had and turned off the lights just before 8--a first. Usually leave lighted window decorations lit and flashing and lights on much later.

 o
RE: weather

Is that a lot of rain to get at one time in your area?

For us in Michigan that is a lot of rain. They said on the news this morning that October 2009 was our second highest rainfall on record. It had rained just a little over 8 inches for the month so that rain that we just had was a lot.

Also, is that considered windy?

With all of the forestry here in Michigan, it is windy. If you live within 5 miles of the shoreline of Lake Michigan, you can add another 10mph to what we get in the interior parts of the state.

Take care, Bernie.

 o
RE: weather

Interesting.

It is not uncommon to have 50+ mph winds here during Summer storms or when a cold front first blows in.

As far as rain, we had 14.5 inches in one day earlier this year...11.5 came down in around 3 hours.

RE: weather

Temp hit 70° today...rare here for November!

Opened a couple of windows for fresh air circulating through our second floor.

Got to spend a couple of relaxing hours working on garden clean-up late this afternoon, watched the sun go down, kept working, cutting up spent flower stems & scapes, letting them fall onto the soil to gradually decompose through the winter months. Kept working until I couldn't see any more. I should get one of those miner's hats with the built-in flashlight...it would give the neighbors something to talk about.

Should be nice again tomorrow.

Julie

 o
RE: weather

I have a couple of those headlamps(miner's lights) but have to wear goggles if I use them, since bugs see the light and fly full speed toward it...a good way to get you eye put out.

Glad you got some work done outdoors. I bet it was relaxing. I am fixing to start moving things into my greenhouses, if time permits...looks like rain.

Kt

 o
RE: weather

Julie, you better be wearing those steel-toed flip flops. Oh, that right, you don't like flip flops. Ok, how about steel-toed sandals. And don't tell me it's getting cold outside. If
Grasshopper (Kungfu man) can wear sandals in the snow so can you. And don't say " Well, why don't you wear them Bernie" because I wear my steel-toed Mickey Mouse boots.

Bernie

 o
RE: weather

Kt,
LOL! Headlamps (miner's lights) with goggles, huh?
My neighbors would surely think I've gone bonkers if I wear both!

Bernie,
Oh, but I DO wear sandlas in the snow in the winter, (wear them in the house all year-round) if I need something in my car or the garage, or need to put the garbage out, and I'm too lazy to put on my boots. I can stand a couple of minutes of snow covered toes.

I get a stern talking-to if I wear sandlas while doing yard work, garden work, or driving my car.

Going out now to find some garden clean-up to do...feels more like mid-October:))))

Julie
