Fixed computer

| About 5 weeks ago this computer would start-up and then 5 seconds later it would shut down. Nothing on the screen, just start and shut down. I thought my hard drive went out, so I took it out and put it into another laptop and it was working fine. Did a google search and found the answer to the problem. A video chip separation problem. It seems that the HP dv series has a heating problem and the chip looses the connection.
Did some more googling to find out how to fix the problem. Found this on Youtube. It's 18 minutes long if you want to look at it. Basically, you tear the whole computer apart so you can get to the motherboard. Then you use a heating device (I used a heating gun) to reheat the solder to make the connection again. Put every thing back together and hope for the best.
Five hours of my time and 2 screws left behind, the computer is working. It's been on for about 3 hours now. The only thing that I have not tried was the DVD drive. Maybe after I type this, I'll slip some Moody Blues in the DVD and see if it works. Hey, what the heck, I'll do it right now. It's working!!!
I think that I'll use this laptop this week just to make sure that it will hold up to my usage. Keeping fingers crossed.

| I had a similar problem at work this past week. I finally took apart the computer and blew the inside clean with an air hose, then I disconnected and then reconnected all of the connections inside. Turns out, it was the on/off button used to turn on the computer...it was getting stuck(halfway in or halfway depressed) and the computer was turning on, and then about 10 seconds after starting, it would turn off. | I didn't have any problems with dust on the inside of the computer. At the beginning of the month, I take the shop vac to the fan area and other vent areas. You shouldn't have dust problems if you do regular maintenance. Bernie |
