More spam complaints

Posted by sushipup (My Page) on
Mon, Aug 22, 11 at 12:50

I'm seeing more old-timers complain about the spam on various forums. I report it when I see it, and encourage others to do the same, but I'm starting to see comments that indicate that long-time users are pretty fed up with the spam.

Any comments?

An op-ed at Nytimes.com, The Decline of the Online Message Board - NYTimes.com specifically mentions ivillage down about the fifth paragraph. (I would skip the first paragraph. Some might think its worth reeding.)

RE: More spam complaints

I just sent this message, all just posted in one forum:

from benmiller, all today on Electronics Forum

RE: More spam complaints

Interesting article, Albert. But the complaints I read had to do specifically with the lack of handling of the spam and how junky that makes the forums.

Yes, the online forum is an endangered species, I fear, just due to the maturing of the internet, as well as Facebook and other influences.

 o
RE: More spam complaints, more

The porn links are still there in Electronics this morning, and here's a new one in CareGivers, another forum that gets spammed on a regular basis. In fact, the first post on this thread is spam, too.

http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/care/msg031458003619.html?3

from Brian Keating (conjugation2@gmail.com)
(No link to page)

 o
RE: More spam complaints, correction

some of the porn links are gone in electronics, but not all of them. I still count 10 from benmiller, promoting a sugar daddy website and a gay sugar daddy website, complete with clickable link. Does that sound questionable to you? Sounds like a link to porn to me.

One of the posts on one thread was removed, all the others are still there. Sigh.

 o
RE: More spam complaints

I hate spam on the forums, and enjoy those so much more that are pretty spam free.

Spammers sell JUNK!

Spammers steal bandwidth!

Spammers should be sued for stealing bandwidth.

Spammers are the scum of the earth....well that might be a bit over the top.

Visiting a forum that is riddled with spam is comparable to walking into a dirty public restroom.

Visiting a forum riddled with spam is comparable to walking along a beach riddled with trash.

Oh yeah...sugar dad site sure sounds off color, if you know what I mean.

Here is a link that might be useful: Sue a spammer

 o
RE: More spam complaints

bandsfurniture.com must sell junk because they advertise via spamming forums.

 o
RE: More spam complaints

The bad part about the ones in Electronics is that the link is to an "adult" oriented website, AKA porn. And this is supposed to be a family-friendly website!

If I were paying for advertising here, I'd be very upset.

 o
RE: More spam complaints

Anyone else have more spam links to post here? Maybe the Powers That Be will see this thread if we keep it going.

 o
RE: More spam complaints

http://www.tollgard-living.com/ must sell junk as they advertise by spamming forums

tollgard-living REVIEW

There...if anyone searches their name and review, they will find this post. The spammers name is andertonj...sigh...and yes, have reported it/them. Spammers must not know how they are loathed and that they are actually making a very bad name for their company by ignoring the Terms of Service and illegally advertising, thus stealing bandwidth.

Sue a spammer!

Yep, especially bad if the links are to 'mature' sites.

Sushi, did you frequent The Test Forum before it became 'members only'? Spambots posting very bad things often filled up the entire page. I whined and whined saying that the Test Forum was often one's first stopping place at GW, thus their first impression. Eventually, they made it a member's only forum...thank goodness. it was a nightmare.

 o
RE: More spam complaints

Here's an example of the spam on Electronics... Think it looks "safe"? I don't think so!

* Posted by benmiller (My Page) on

I'm just about to register, do you think this site is safe?

Here is a link that might be useful: http://gay-sugar-baby.sugarstube.com/

 o
RE: More spam complaints

I only came to the Test Forum within the past year. I've been on GardenWeb since 2000, altho under another name for more than half the time. So, no, I don't recall the old days of this forum. Sounds interesting. But Spike zapped spam quickly, no?

 o
RE: More spam complaints

But Spike zapped spam quickly, no?
I'm not sure as I didn't wander off of the few GW forums I frequented...it all started with Tomatoes, then Seed Exchange, and The Plant Exchange, then etc. The garden forums seldom have spam, unless it is a spambot that spams all the forums. I do know spiko deleted posts quickly on the exchanges, if someone was asking for donations, or stuff for postage without anything to trade.

He was also very (too) quick in banning members too. I got banned over something silly. It was awful.

 o
RE: More spam complaints

YEAH! I emailed today that there were still about 10 threads in the Electronics Forum that were infected with the porn link, but I didn't link to them this time. And now they are all gone! Thank you thankyouthankyou!

 o
RE: More spam complaints

Now someone named MissK78 has spammed a whole bunch of posts on the Cookware forum. Sigh. To many to report each one to the powers that be, at least for me today. Just registered today, too.

 o
RE: More spam complaints

I right clicked on their link and copied the link location and then did a google search of it. That brings up the results without ever having to go to their site.

Notice...I just did a review for them, in case anyone ever searched for a review for them.

 o
RE: More spam complaints

Thanks, Sue, will you post that on the Cookware forum, too, or one one of the resurrected threads that got spammed? If I have time later today, I'll send in the info to The Powers That Be.

 o
RE: More spam complaints

Hey, Sue, go blast JessicaLucky from Albania over in Computer Forum. She/he spammed the same stuff a few weeks ago and is already back for second helpings of free bandwidth.

 o
RE: More spam complaints

I couldn't make these things up, too bizarre!

Here's one advertising lawyers in New Delhi, India.

RE: More spam complaints

Nasty spam, and Sue discovered that the site generates more spam. I've reported it, hope that others report it, too.

Here is a link that might be useful: nasty free spam

 o
RE: More spam complaints///

Yeah, that nasty spam got zapped away!

 o
RE: More spam complaints

And the Spamish lawyers got gone...YAY!

but jessicalucky is still there. I wonder if she is thought to be a valid poster or something?

Here is a link that might be useful: Google results for 'jessica keylogger'

 o
RE: More spam complaints

All I know is that often the spam doesn't disappear unless I also post it here as well as send in a contact/complaint form. I suspect this forum gets the most attention.

And yes, JessicaLucky needs to get herself keystroked into oblivion!

 o
RE: More spam complaints

Here's today's newest, from Bangladesh. I googled the company and guess what? They sell advertising! What a coincidence, no? There are two thread, he's so creative.

Here is a link that might be useful: more spam

 o
RE: More spam complaints

Posts from Sweety1 look like porn or selling sex toys, don't you agree? Inappropriate, to say the least. Spammed two different posts on this forum.

Here is a link that might be useful: What are you selling?

 o
RE: More more spam complaints

And the spam from Goldenfunlady is still there. Guess she's getting her money's worth with free advertising on this forum!

RE: Thank you!

Zap zap zap---all gone! Thank you!

 o
RE: More spam complaints

Yes...Thank you! Spam seems to be slower recently, or else it is getting deleted quicker.

How about this one?... I'm sure there will be 'some' who will get sucked in by this troll. If it isn't a real troll, it is someone who should be seeking professional help, imho anyway.

unbelievable. Your thoughts?

 o
RE: More spam complaints

Here's a new one posted from Pakistan by a brand new "user".

And Sue, that one's just plain weird. Just leave it alone and maybe it will go back to lurking under its bridge. Yuck!

Here is a link that might be useful: Facebook spam/scam from Pakistan

 o
RE: More spam complaints

I see that someone zapped that facebook scam (thank you!), but our old friend cocowhite is still trying to spam us about keyloggers on the Computer Forum. Sometimes tag-teams with our old pal jessicalucky.

Here is a link that might be useful: keyloggiing spam again and again.

 o
RE: More spam complaints

I'm surprised to still see cocowhite spamming because I'm sure there has been spam removed that was her/his. Doing a search there at CH doesn't bring up any of her old posts, so I know they were deleted.

hmmmmm.....

well, I reported coco just now.

No one has replied much to the apartment guy that can feel his neighbor's breathing...but then the forum has been slow. I'd say more, but don't wanna be over the top, in case he/she possibly has mental health issues.

 o
RE: More spam complaints

I think you can be assured that the poster in the apartment is either pulling legs or does indeed have issues. Just let the troll go back to his bridge.

 o
RE: More spam complaints, more

and yet another spammer hits the medical alert thread in caregivers. Every other post on there has been spam, I swear.

 o
RE: More spam complaints

hmmm...poof...gone.

Anyway...here is a fun thread...see last reply by OP and note that it has rained and that Barbie has on her yellow (Big Bird) rain slicker.

Cute thread

 o
RE: More spam complaints

Yes, that's a darling picture!

It seems that when I complain directly, plus remark here, the spam gets zapped. Which is pretty darned wonderful, if you ask me!

 o
RE: More spam complaints

Sue, check out the first two posts on Household Finances, please. New posts (just above mine) are not from brand-new registrants, but the syntax and advice are lousy, with links that are questionable. I questioned both, but didn't call them out as spammers.

Are some spammers getting smarter?

Here is a link that might be useful: Household finances

 o
RE: More spam complaints

Yeah, I'm betting rosehusten is a spammer...
Her other posts with links to the same site

and yeah...clarkandrew45 is a spammer as well...promoting dog food and several of 'his sites'. Yeah...they are getting a bit smarter, but they are still so dumb that they 'think' they are smarter than the average bear. He dabbles in a bunch of advertising/stuff...posts to 4 year old threads...what a pita.

off to report both of them now.

Hey...is the pic gone from the link above to a thread at the Iris Forum? I see a box with gray squiggles in it.

 o
RE: More spam complaints//

Here's another pure spam post, most gibberish, and from someone who just registered.

Those last two threw me just because they weren't people who had just registered. The content was obvious, tho. Thanks for reporting them.

This one in Electronics is just nonsense.

Yeah, but it's getting gone. I guess forum spam is just a fact of life so long as there are low lifes aline...sigh.

MST looks cleaned up already...yay!

 o
RE: More spam complaints

Yes, I am happy to report it, at least as long as it gets zapped. It was far more frustrating to report it and then have nothing happen to remove it!

RE: More spam complaints

Sigh.

Should I give up my efforts? It's a post about recipes and dishware, which conveniently is for sale.

 o
RE: More spam complaints

And I'm the bad guy, according to people on one forum when I encouraged them to report spam.

What??? Where??? I wonder if I can guess who it might be. That's why, most of the time I don't usually say I have reported a spammer...There are some I'm sure, that would take it the wrong way and then think I was reporting posts that get pulled for other reasons...you know what I mean...Forum Police.....some of the nasty tactless folks at the KT, and when they think they have a 'right' to discuss religion and other Hot Topics, they get all twerped out when their posts get pulled. Sheesh...

drop me an email and point to the thread and the complainer...you have my curiosity up. There are a lot of folks that would just as soon whine/complain about spam then taking a few seconds to report it...sigh...lazy? Something for nothing and then complain when it is not perfect?

 o
RE: More spam complaints

email sent. If you don't get it, I used thw rong address

 o
RE: More spam complaints

Got it...and I only have one address, well, I have another one that I 'like never' use and few folks, if any have it. The one I use, is the first and only one I have had since getting an email address. I've switched carriers several times but never saw any advantage to using their email. It confuses me when folks have 2,3, or 4 email addresses and I don't know which one is valid and read with any frequency.

One guy I know has 4 of them, and I get emails from the different addresses. If I send him an email, I just send it to all of them to be assured he will read it and reply in a timely fashion.

It also confuses me if I have a different email address listed for someone and it isn't their GW email. What?

RE: More spam complaints

Maybe we should ask GW to institute a 72 hr waiting period after registering before a new member could post anything. Seems like many spammers register, post their spam, and then go away to spam some other site. If they had to wait 72 hours before they could post, I suspect many would never bother coming back to spam us. Of course, that would be a bit of a problem for legitimate new members but...

Just a thought.
