What to do with my former tomato growing area?

We grew some amazing tomatoes for a few years in one section of our property. Last year was pretty disappointing. I dug up a new place for the tomatoes and peppers for this spring, but now we have this empty space where the tomatoes were where all rocks have been removed, and begs for a new crop of... something.

What can/ should I plant there? I want to get my tomatoes back there eventually because it's convenient and best place for sun. What can I grow there now that will be helpful to the soil, and edible for us? Thinking about carrots, radishes, onions, cucumbers, strawberries, or anything else, but we prefer it to be edible.

Rotating crops on a family scale. Thanks in advance for your personal experiences in East Tennessee.
