There isn't such a thing as a typical veggie garden layout, for Tennessee or anywhere else. Even the tried and true method of placing plants in nice, orderly rows has fallen by the wayside in favor of bedding arrangements. You just need to remember to make your vegetables accessible from all sides, to sow tall plants in the right location so that they won't cast shade on the rest of the garden, to provide convenient access to water, etc.

You can find examples of garden layouts in some of the seed catalogs. I'll attach one for you. There are books in the library, and your local extension office probably has a vegetable growing guide. You all need to sit around the table and make a list of your must have plants, and then carefully determine how much room you can devote to each plant.

The only veggie garden basics that I follow are:
Make sure that it gets at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.
Try to lay out the garden so that the sun passes over the garden-longways from East to West. This layout will help with summer storms too.

Spacing and rows are up to you, but access from both sides is valuable. Don't plant tomatoes and peppers next to each other, they are sucesptible to the same diseases. Look into companion plantings like marigolds and zinnias for organic pest control. Good Luck!

A layout I like is having the spring growing vegetables located nearest to the gate, if there's one. I put the sprawling vegetables, potatoes, squash, cucumbers near the back of garden to run free. One area is dedicated to perennials such as strawberries, asparagus. In the center of mine I have an herb circle with chives, oregano, basil. I have a walkway thru the center of the garden and 3 foot wide rows on either side (that's the best way to grow in wide rows). They are also mulched with straw which I love! Less watering and less weeding! It's up to you in how it's laid out, just put your tallest plants towards the north side of the garden to keep from shading your other plants. Good luck!

I'm going with a raised bed vegetable garden this year. It's much easier than the traditional in ground version for smaller gardens. As for layouts I'll attach a link to what mine are going to look like. I still need to fill them up but they are almost done.
