For the morning sun side I would do impatiens. They do well and bloom their heads off with minimal effort. I did some in the little windowbox attached to my springhouse.

Oh I like impatients, I also like pansies and violas- would any of those be good to use in the same area?
I decided to put herbs outside of the breakfast nook window, that side receives most of the sun.
Now I just have umpteen more windows to plan ;)

I live in an older house, too (1918) -- and my kitchen windows get alot of sun (they face southwest) -- I've had great luck with basil, rosemary and lavendar in my window box -- oh and Stevia, too (that super sweet plant). Mine is outside my kitchen window so it's easy to water -- but even with that heat they have done great. good luck!
