Just purchased one of these and was wondering who has had luck with it and general hardiness temperature without dieback.

Dieback has not been a problem with mine, and it is not sheltered. Let me encourage you to select your placement carefully and provide a strong trellis for it. This baby grows!! - and the fragrance is wonderful...mine's getting ready to bloom now.
