Planting Taters before St. Paddys Day

I was talking with an old farmer and he is getting his "Taters" ready to plant within the next couple of weeks. I thought that this was early, but he said .... "Oh No missy, if you want a good crop of Taters with about 10 to 1 return, you plant them before St. Patricks Day."

He always has the most beautiful potatoes and an abundance of them. I helped his wife dig some one year and they had a huge amount of taters on each plant.

Anyone else heard this??

Carolyn, my grandfather, who lived in north Louisiana, always said potatoes had to be planted before Valentine's Day. Now I rarely get them in the ground that early, but they always do best for us if planted by early March.

MY DH planted our potatoes today...plus onions, cabbage, collards, spinach, and mustard

I can remember living in indep, mo.(60's) Dad would have us two boys planting taters(& Pulling Weeds not hoeing!)by St. Patricks day every year.

Woo, wish I'd known this one! I'm still figuring out when the best time is to plant anything. I guess I'll plant some now and hope for the best.
