Just don't plant them right up next to your house (if that's possible). I've never even noticed wasps or hornets around my grapes. Surely this concern can't be worth removing all the fruit from your vines.

Sorry if my previous post was taken in the wrong way. What I meant was, what's preventing you from eliminating the wasp problem altogether? I had a pretty bad one, but with a few (read: 7 or 8) cans of that wasp & hornet killer & a broom I'm now wasp-free.

Wouldn't this be preferred to growing fruitless grapes?

As for eliminating the wasp problem, I don't know if that's possible. We live near a wooded area, so some years the nests are impossible to find.

I would much rather have the grapes, but I've been told that would be a bad idea. Maybe I'll just give it a try and find out how bad it is myself.

I have a couple of 'Concord' vines (inherited from previous owner, not my idea) and some species grapes. I plan on adding a few more cultivars (and maybe getting rid of the 'Concord's in the next few years). I'm in the process of building a small orchard with numerous types of fruit, and haven't seriously gotten to the grapes yet.

Having wasps visit doesn't worry me...having nests (especially hidden ones) is a different story. I get at least one per year over at my farm. I let one get pretty big a couple of years back, and they started getting aggressive. I hit a smaller one last year with some spray and took it out with no problem. So far, the nests have been on the other side of my farm from the grapes and I haven't even noticed them visiting the grapes.
