A Theraputic Garden project

Over the past week I was busy building some monster-sized raised beds at my Church, which also hosts an "Adult Day Care Center"

ADA_plant_boxes.jpg

Each raised bed took 1 Ton of gravel on the bottom and 3 Cubic Yards of soil!

Luckily, I had some great helpers!

The reason the boxes are so darned tall is that they needed to be accessible from a wheelchair, as this is a "Therapeutic Garden" for Down Syndrome and Autistic Adults.

Here is the "completed" project(one bed is planted) I'm not looking foreword to moving 2 additional tons of Gravel and 6 more yards of soil, twice with a shovel and wagon, but after seeing the joy on the faces of the participants, it is all worth it!!! (I just need to keep telling myself that as I'm scooping and hauling and scooping again ;-)

At the recent plant swap hosted at the same location, some folks had inquired how they may make contributions to this project. While I am reluctant to do so, for fear of seeming to be _asking_ for donations, which I most certainly am_NOT I have looked at both my personal expenditures as well as those of the organization, and I have conceded to post an e-mail address which my be utilized to make a contribution through pay-pal. beadwindow(at)gmail(dot)com

And I can assure those contributing that ALL proceeds will go directly towards the funding of The Therapeutic Garden. Also we are a 503(c)(3), so individual and business donors can claim a federal income tax deduction.

I can be one to back this statement for him.

I will most definately give something towards that next time my pay day hits. What an awesome prodject.

My daughter was talking about how she had so much fun "working" all weekend! SHe really enjoyed it. I hope she didn't get in the way to much. I tried to keep her away but she was enjoying it to much.

I am glad that the participants from the Adult Day care center enjoyed their gardening

At times, they all "slowed" the over-all "progress", but they were all having so much fun, and performing a valuable community service, that it was important to let them contribute, despite any slow-downs incurred.

All the kids did an awesome job and should be very proud of themselves for their charitable contributions, (whether they knew at the time they were doing it or not) and I would be honored to have them assist on any of my working parties.

Also, please share with her these pictures, so she can see, and be proud of, what her work produced…. Especially the unbridled joy on the faces of the folks whom she helped to realize their dream of having their own garden.

(Okay, now I'm getting all emotional now. Anybody got a tissue?-)

Thanks to all for your words of encouragement.
And especially to those who have made contributions to the cause. You are greatly enabling "Phase-II" of the project : the completion of the two additional beds.

If anybody has any compost/soil/peat/etc. of any kind, feel free to drop by and dump them in to help fill those beds!-)

John,
Thank you for the opportunity to contribute. I know I said it one too many times Saturday but I was really sorry I hadn't brought my tools to help. Those kids were great. Put me to shame! I may need to hire them for my own home projects! Best wishes to the new gardeners. Please keep us posted as to the progress of the garden.

You are all invited back for the Fall Harvest Festival. You can enjoy the "fruits (and veggies) of our labor"

I have almost scrounged up enough cha-ching to buy the last 9 cubic yards of soil we need to fill the remaining (2) raised beds.
(We are getting a pretty decent deal.. 9 Yards of garden mix _delivered_ for $150.)

If anybody is of a mind to come over to the church and help move this stuff from the big pile left by the dump-truck over to the raised beds, it will likely be delivered sometime next week and we'll have a working party on the morning of the 31st (with pancake & sausage breakfast, of course ;-)
