eggshells for strawberries?

I'm trying to keep the slugs and snails out of my strawberry bed. I've read about using eggshells to keep them out, but I'm not sure how thick/heavy I need to spread them. I have hilled rows, and I've let the runners grow where they will, as long as it's not in the ditches.

Can I just scatter them through the hills, or does it need to be a solid line? Will the snails and slugs just dodge around the shells if it's not thick enough?
