That's a neat idea! Could you explain a little more, do you keep adding soil?
We got chickens last year too, and they wiped out all my plants, including some 'poisonous' ones- the Calla lilies.
Plants I had in big pots (bananas and citrus) seemed like perfect places for them to dig a hole and rest in the cool soil. They're lucky they're cute!

Good idea, Atokadawn. I planted tomatoes, leaf lettuce, bell peppers, squash, and beans in old used rubber tires last year. :) They did great, so we plan to do the same thing this year.

We plant our tomatoes and cucumbers on a 30' length fence 6' high in our backyard garden. We usually have several wind storms and tieing the tomatoes to the fence works great. At least they do not get blown over and break, especially when they are heavy with tomatoes. And the cucumbers grow up and around the fence so we have more room to grow other vegetables. Besides, it saves the "tired back" some pain.

I started with a empty feed bag(plastic stuff). Then added 6 inches of soil and the potatoe eyes. Covered them lightly. Once they got about 5 inches tall, I added more mulch/soil to the top. I just keep adding to come up to the bottom of the leaves as they grow. You can use straw, mulch, hay, or about anything for them to grow in once they have their roots in the soil on the bottom.
Once they reach the top of the bag, the stem will be all roots and the taters will develop on that. Wait till the plant on top turns brown and tip the bag out to get your harvest.

I have also planted tomatoes in 5 gallon buckets, like a topsy thingie,only drilled the hole in the side of the bucket for more support of the plant. I can grow 2 per bucket. I hang it on the fence also.
