Did Drought kill my Trees?

Hello everyone. My first post to gardenweb. I live in the Nashville area, and I have 5 mature water maples in my yard. Last week I noticed that only one is leafed out and the other 4 have just a few clusters of leaves here and there but are for the most part still bare. I didn't think that the drought last year would harm such a big tree but I guess I was dead wrong. The one that is green is near some other smaller evergreens that I watered periodically so I know that's why it is doing well. Last summer they all dropped there leaves in late July, and a friend said not to worry they were just going dormant and would return to life again this year.

My question is how do I determine if these trees are dead? Should I wait until next spring and give them a second chance?

I am broken hearted if I killed these trees, friends.... Had I known they'd die I would have watered them. Thanks.

Joey
