Memphis Fall Swap

Posted by angelajgood 7b (My Page) on

There is going to be one, isn't there? I hope so! I really wanted to go to the spring swap and missed it. I am new to gardening (this is my 2nd season) and I am obsessed. Two years ago we finally tore out the huge asphalt pad in the back of our house (we spent years renovating our old house, so the yard was moved down the list) and had a landscaper install a number of trees and shrubs. Now I am not happy with everything that is there. There is really nothing wrong with them, it's just that I want something different and think there are too many where they are. Gardening is all about editing, moving, and refining, right? I want to put in more native azaleas and such and some of the things I have are taking up alot of room.

I am planning to cull some Blue Muffin Arrowwood viburnum and at at least one or two Birkwood Virbunum and Judd viburnum. This is freaking my husband out a bit, but if I can swap he might feel a bit better. Would there likely be any interest in these?

I've been lurking for quite some time and have seen all the comments about there being not much traffic on this forum. I'm planning to try to do my part, since I have a great deal to yammer on about with this new obsession.

Thanks!
Angela

RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Welcome to the group. YES there will be a fall swap. I for one will be intrested in some of your plants. I will know more later as to what all I will be bringing.

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

I want to be there for this fall swap not for sure if I can though.

Do people pot and root the plants to be traded or is it more like bare roots that are traded or seedlings, sorry new to these in person swaps?? Also do people put out list of what they are bringing and what they want prior to going??

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

We are a very informal group. We haven't gotten very big.....yet. The swap is pretty much anything goes, potted up plants, cuttings, bulbs, seedlings, seeds. Last swap I had a surplus of pots, so I traded those. Someone brought some decorative lighting to use as seed mats. So it is pretty much what you think your fellow gardener would be interested in. Has anybody thought of a date yet? I am already started putting things on my calender for fall and work always fills in its schedule early, I am no longer working weekends but just want to make sure I am not working the night before the swap! I get grumpy without sleep and y'all really don't want to see me grumpy!! :) And I love the swap and don't want to miss it!!!

Mary

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Sounds great. I'm going to go ahead and figure out which ones I'll bring and root prune those so they will transplant better. I'm looking forward to the swap!

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

I wouldn't miss the swap for anything! This will be my 3rd one and I love going! This brings me to my question.... at last year's fall swap, I got a cutting for an annual that blooms purple up and down the stem, it's about 3 feet tall now and popular with butterflies (I don't have hummingbirds until later this month). I don't remember the name or who gave it to me. Mary, was it you? Lani, maybe??? I feel silly not knowing the name of one of the most popular plants in the garden. Judy

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Judy, look to see if maybe it is anise hyssop, it that is what it is, I brought it. Other than that I am not sure.

Mary

RE: Memphis Fall Swap

I might have some Iris if I go. I don't know if I can make Memphis or not. I have a TON of purple ones but I know someone that has a field of at least 25 different varieties of iris(es?). Yellow, black, gold, white with purple markings, anything you can imagine. He said they were from a guy that spent $8 a bulb for these in the 1980s. I dont have pictures or anything. Do you think anyone will believe me? They are just breathtaking.

I grow mostly vegetables so I wouldnt have any seeds ready for any kind of swap like that. I might also have a banana tree pup in the spring. I dont know. I just bought mine this spring. I dont even know for sure what kind it is! Boy I am a bunch of help eh? LOL

RE: Memphis Fall Swap

I am new here - moved into Ripley last week, and I would love to go to a swap! Who sets the date and location?

Pat

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Not to step on toes but if you are looking for the basic plant swap info/rules and regs for all the plant swaps then you can hit the MTPS website for ideas at: http://www.midtnplantswap.com/

Now that Rhonda has taken over for me, Lavonne and I are looking forward to visiting the Memphis and Knoxville swaps!

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Oh so sorry! I thought there was only one swap in TN and it was in Memphis this year! LOL

Here is a link that might be useful: Jen's Victory Garden Blog

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Jen we have the Memphis Plant Swap, The Middle Tennessee Plant Swap and the Knoxville Plant Swap. All three hold Spring and Fall swaps. So if you're REALLY addicted then you can hit six plant swaps in TN each year!!!

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

We'd be happy to host the Memphis Swap again at Good Shepherd U.M. Church.

Someone propose some dates and I'll clear it w/ "The Board".

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Thanks sandsquid for letting us have it at the church again.

How about October 24 (Saturday)?

-jennifer

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Sounds great to me! I promise I will be there!

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

That day should be good for me too. My daughter has a band competition that day in Humbolt but the larger bands go last so I should be able to make both!!! I can't wait, guess I need to start getting things together now!!! Can't wait to see everybody!!!

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

I'm not working that weekend so can come. I've had to miss the previous swaps because I was working.

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

October 24 seems OK, but I have something else cooking in Oct that will take precedence, it just does not have a date yet.
we are opening up a Community Dental Clinic for the Amish of Ethrridge / Three Oaks, TN and that may be the "Big Day" for us.

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Hey.............. I am coming! I got my own truck this time!

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

OK OCT. 24th, Good Shepherd U M Church ???? Time ??? Please give physical address for my GPS. Thanks.

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Gads! Something always comes up! A niece is getting married that day. I don't yet know the time but I am hoping it will be mid to late afternoon. John, regarding the date, could it move back to the 17 if your other event conflicts? You always work very hard for the swap, so I would hate to think you might get into a double bind. I see from the thread several people have schedule issues too. I will be happy and as helpful as I can with any date. Can't promise to have much to share, but we will see.

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Oct 17th is the weekend of the MTPS plant swap south of Nashville.

Eveyn

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

I'll be there! Don't know what I'm bringing yet except more empty yellow Tidy Cat "buckets" - I always have those. Judy

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

DOH! That's what I get for not following the threads more closely on here. Oct. 24 it is.
As usual, I will have coleus cuttings to share. I will also have some coral porterweed cuttings. Remember Evelyn Talada taught us how to propagate them? Did anyone grow one successfully in your garden this year?

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Has John gotten back to anyone to let us know if we have an space? If not do we have a back up plan? Leigh I wasn't successful on rooting mine, but I want to try again. I have started a few epi cuttings so far and a couple of Ecuador Pink brugs. Other than that haven't done much. My life has been so topsy turvey this year my garden has been neglected. I want to know where that cute young couple is that were new last swap??? One of the best things I got at the swap was some 4 o'clock seedlings from them and they have done really well!!!

Mary

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

I will also be there for the "Fall Swap" too!!! I can't wait. Jackie

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Porterweed!!! That's what that big purple plant is that I have which I got at last year's fall swap! My coral one died but the purple one did great and both the butterflies and hummers love it. I can bring cuttings if anyone want some. I will also have some hydrangea cuttings that I have been rooting in water (about 15 of them!). I am cleaning out the garage and have a 50 ft. hose with a bad tear in one end but is handy if you want to make your own hose. There's a terrific garden fork that needs a shim (whatever that is) because the fork part keeps coming off the handle part. A friend gave me a new one. Really looking forward to our getting together. Wish I had more plants to bring but this wasn't a great year for my garden. Judy

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

I think this year, I will post my "Haves" and see what/or if anyone wants any of a particular plant before I dig up all of the plants that I could bring. This way I will not bring way too many plants then have to try and find homes for the left overs. Suggestions on this thought anyone???? Jackie

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Now hear this....

Oct. 24 it is!!!

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Great! Thanks John! I don't have as many plants this fall to share but I can't wait to see the Memphis area crew and some new faces.

Jennifer

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

I will have hydrangeas and I hope to have some precious clemantis that is a miniature and has lavender bell-like flowers. I have sown some seed; also saved some seed in case it doesn't sprout this late in season. Then there are the yellow buckets, a garden fork AND I have an electric cultivator that seems to have a short in it. It goes for about 2 minutes, cuts off, you wait about 3 minutes and it goes again. Anyone who can work on small electric engines is welcome to it. After going to the Hummingbird Festival in Strawberry Plains MS and hearing a native plant speaker, I will be digging up all my itea 'Henry's Garnet' and replacing them with a native plant. Anyone want a small shrub that has beautiful white brush-like flowers in the spring and beautiful purple leaves in the fall? Will have about a dozen. Am very sad to remove this plant but my concience makes me. I have a condo and limited garden room so am looking for a small native shrub instead. Judy

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Judy - I would love a hydrangea. Are you giving up the itea because they aren't native? I'd like one of those too.

I may have a few unnamed daylillies and arum (candlestick flower) to share. I have garlic chives, which aren't much for cooking but they have a nice white bloom that is just starting to fade. I have marigold seeds for "scarlet starlet" and "solan", which are both nice, low, bushy varieties.

I am looking for some hosta and garden ferns, if anyone has extra. I will be happy to reciprocate with veggie and flower seedlings in the spring.

Hey Mary - my brugs are doing great outside this year; is it too late to root cuttings for the swap? Do I just cut and put in that sandy/soil medium?

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Jennifer, yes you can have a hydrangea (or 10). I am giving up the itea because it isn't native and no Memphis insects will have anything to do with it (because it isn't programmed into their DNA) and this guy last Sat. made a convincing argument (at least to me) that I should only have plants that are native to the mid-south. Or pretty much and he specifically listed itea as a foreigner, so out it goes. I'll be glad to give you some; I've loved it for 7 years. Judy

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Could someone please post the physical address for the GPS and the hours...

I am really excited about the swap, it will be my first one. I will look around to see what I can bring, I don't have much because I just moved here... next swap I will have some plumeria if anyone wants it... I don't know the names of my plants, unfortunately, but slowly learning ;-)

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Lets party!!!!!!!

So far , I will have rose of sharons, hosta's, and assorted other stuff. I will try to fins some ferns.

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Yeehaw! I am really looking forward to this!
Judy Dean, I could use that garden fork. I broke mine in this dang clay trying to amend it with cow poo and leaf mold.
A reminder: As usual, I will have coleus cuttings, Sedona, Alabama Sunset, Pink Chaos, Red Ruffles, two unamed. Also Coral porterweed cuttings.
Lani, what color are your Rose of Sharons? Ava wants purple ones. What Hostas? I have way more shade than I had hoped I did. I will bring photos of my lousy vegetable plants. Pathetic!
Jennifer, I love marigolds! I may have too much shade but I have yellow ones that reseeded in a pot for me. I have others I bought that just flunked out on me. Still, I would like some of your seeds.
Can't wait to see you all and meet the new ones! Thanks John!

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Leigh - I will bring plenty of seeds for you. My yard gets a decent amount of shade so maybe these will work for you. I would love coleus cuttings but am not familiar enough with the names to know what is what.

The address to the church (thanks again john) is
6050 Summer Ave
Memphis, TN 38134

Because John is awesome enough to let us have it at his church again, I think John is the official setter of the time but usually we have it midmorning and have a potluck lunch. This is a good opportunity to get to know everyone.

Not sure if we have mentioned lately, but thanks again John for securing the location.

Jennifer

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Leigh, consider the garden fork yours. I would like to try again to keep the coral porterweed alive. The hummers and butterflies loved the purple ones! Can I put my name in the hat for a Rose of Sharon? Any color would be great. I'm trying to do native plants and I'm pretty sure that's a native. I'm gettin' excited!! Judy

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Folks are welcome to arrive and depart anytime

I'll get there about 0800, to get breakfast started.

REMEMBER Pancakes & sausage patties is ON ME

I'd like to try and get that cultivator working, if I can it can become "community property" and anybody who needs it can came loan it out.

 o
donations, etc

Several folks have inquired about payment. donations, etc for use of the church.

While I will never be the one to say the church will refuse donations, I do want to say that is not the point of us hosting the plant swap.

We do it because we love to.

But if you wish to contribute something we have a few options:

1)
I and my wife run a (free) Youth and Developmental Archery Program on Wednesday nights.

see link below

If you wish to contribute to this program a check made out to Good Shepherd U.M.C. with "Youth Archery" in the memo field will see that it get added to the correct account.
You can do pay-pal at : goodshepherdyoutharchery@gmail.com

Also please consider coming out and trying archery, it's great fun and it is 100% FREE to participate, we provide everything even the fresh popped popcorn. I like to sy you are never too old our young but the truth is, most kids under 6 do not have the physical development yet. but we have folks into their 80's shooting!

2)
Donations for Realfoot Rural Ministries.
Any new unwrapped toy for a child, or non perishable food item. There are collection boxes in the front hallway.

3)
Anything you want to plant to beautify the church grounds, grab your shove and go for it!

Here is a link that might be useful: Good Shepherd Youth and Developmental Archery

RE: Memphis Fall Swap

jennifer this is a great time to take cuttings. I have a few Ecuador Pink Brugs started, I just put mine in potting soil but the later you get them started the faster draining soil you need, they do not like to be wet in the cooler weather and will rot. I started a few epis and have a few adenium seedlings. Anything else I come up with will be a surprise to you and me both :) I will have more in the spring, I am planning on winter sowing again this year, I had a lot of success with it last year and it was really a lot of fun and kept me busy in the winter!

Mary

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

John, I'll put your name on the cultivator. Maybe it'll be a quick fix. Judy

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

The Rose of Sharon are in pink and purple. I will "try" to go while they are in bloom so I can tag. Anyone want ferns, or sassafrass trees? I have some nicely rooted ones.
I of course want to try one of anything. LOL!

Judy, may I have a few buckets? I love the color in the backyard as planters. I love hydrangea!
MaeMae, I am so looking forward to my birthday adenium !
Leigh, I have some shade babies for you. Plus things from last swap that I have babied.

Anyone gonna want house plants?

Oh and I will be bringing water plants.

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Lani, I think about you everytime I walk past my adeniums, I still have them outside, it is sad that this season is coming to an end. But I guess I can start looking forward to next spring!!!

Mary

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Wow! The only thing good about Summer speeding away is the quickly approaching Plant Swap! I am so psyched! Judy Dean, please add to my wish list some of those iteas. I just got around to looking them up and I would love a few. I know I've said this before but I have a huge back yard, mostly shade to part shade. My mother and her husband came down at the end of August and we had a tree trimming party. Jesse cut out a bunch of smallish junk trees and limbed up several of the oaks and pecans, so now I have some bright shade. I have really enjoyed watching the light as it moves through and how it has changed. I never before realized how nuanced light is in shade and filtered shade, since I lived with so much full-on sun.Don't get me wrong, I really miss my full sun plants, but I have come to appreciate torenias, my beloved coleus, and of course my latest obsession, huecheras. All thrive in part shade/ full shade settings. Gosh, I really can't wait to see you all and talk and hear about everyone's garden doings.

 o
RE: Memphis Fall Swap

Ok, buckets for Lani and iteas for Leigh!! Hydrangeas out my ears for all!! Lani, I would love Rose of Sharon and ferns! Can't wait to see you all!
Judy

I still have mine left from the last swap but it is only about 4 inches tall right now but it is sooo cute that I just gotta get another one.
Does anyone have the variegated Ginger or variegated Rubber plant? If so, please let me know what you would like to trade for a start. I sooo want these plants. LOL!!! Jackie

RE: Memphis Fall Swap

RAIN..RAIN...RAIN!!!!! I am so close to losing my mind and it is only because I still have a bed unfinished and now is SO WATERLOGGED it'll take a month of sun just to dry it out! I haven't been able to do any significant work in the yard since early Sept.
Onward... Any body want some geraniums to overwinter? I have a pretty one with salmon colored blooms that are spidery little balls. I have a few more that are different. They needed alot more sun than I had in order to bloom but they didn't die. They keep just like house plants and root so easily in just potting soil. Can't wait to see you all, especially because of this rain!

 o
Rain or Shine!!!

I'll be there!
