cut flowers off Crepes makes 'em grow?

I planted some Dynamite Red and Natchez crepe myrtles in the spring and most of them have grown amazingly.

I want them to keep growing, though. Most of them are in full bloom and, while they're pretty, I'd like to skip this season of "pretty" and get them back to the business of *growing*.

Somewhere I have read (or heard) that cutting the flowers off a plant well set them back into their vegetative growth.

Is this true?
