Irises?

I bought some irises at the MTIS sale yesterday. They are bare root with the stems cut back. What do you guys think about how long I can hold them before planting?

Seems like the last time I divided irises, I got away with holding them over the winter in a brown paper bag in our basement. But I was reading planting instructions on a Web site and it said to get them in the ground within two weeks after division. It made me question whether I should try to do this.

I'm asking because I bought a few that I would like to give as Christmas gifts. :)

I would not consider putting them in storage this time of year. They need to be planted out. This time of year, they don't have the energy they need to make it through almost a year without food. You can dig them up in the fall and get them ready to give as a Christmas gift them. My guess is that they wouldn't make it if put in storage now. Also, I see no advantage in doing this even if it would work.
