When do you divide Bearded Irises?

I've but recently returned to TN and wondering about the optimum time to divide and move irises here. July is when I've done it before, but I confess reluctance to do it in this heat. And who knows when the weather will break? What say you? Bite the bullet and do it now? Wait till September? I'm digging up some of my Momma's and it would kill me to lose them. Still, I think of irises as indestructible. I need a reality check.

(My impatience has nothing to do with the big empty spots in the front border awaiting irises, nothing at all.)

Generally anytime after blooming works but I'm waiting until we have a bit more rain. We're nearly bone dry here in Spring Hill although we did have a smattering of rain tonight.

I read somewhere that August is prime time...I don't remember why, I just remember that boggling my mind since August is a harsh month. It also said to cut your fans back when transplanting. I need to divide mine too! Irises are tough..I would water well when you transplant and I think they'll do fine.

Thanks DVT and CottageGirl. We've had a soft rain, with thunderstorms off in the distance today. I suspect I'll dig tomorrow. Wish me luck. Mom's black iris is covered with poison ivy.
