how do I keep things from rotting?

I have small pumkins, large pumpkins, watermelon (well, only 1) and cantaloupe (only 2 so far). I had one large pumpkin growing (it wasn't really too large yet, maybe slightly bigger than a softball. I looked at it on Saturday evening and it was looking good. Today it was I guess rotten- it was soggy and was yellow instead of green like it had been. Any advice on what I can do to keep these things from rotting? Thanks!

You may be watering too much.

Melons and pumpkins can be attacked by pests from below if the skin becomes too soft from overwatering or sitting on wet ground. Place straw under the fruits to help draw the water away from them. Also, concentrate your watering at the base of the vine where it will do the most good.
