Anyone know much about Sourwood?

I have recently become impressed by this small native tree. Apparently the tree is not overall common, though it may be locally abundant in TN and NC. I have also observed quite a few in n GA. Does the tree have any other relatives? Why is it not more common in plantings? Anyone who sees it in bloom or in the fall with both flowers and red foliage should be impressed!
