Deep shade lawn in Middle Tennessee

DVaughn

I have read that TN is in the transition zone between cool weather and warm weather grasses. Thus, lawns are always somewhat tricky here. But my problem is compounded by dense shade from hickory, oak, and maple trees. I have tried both cool weather and warm weather grasses and still end up with no grass eventually. My last attempt has turned out especially bad. I planted a cool weather mix of bluegrass, rye and creeping red fescue. It all came up great in the cool wet of the past FalI when it was planted. But now I have a tight dead thatch to clean up. I am willing to change to any type of ground cover. I am not committed to the grasses. But I am committed to the trees. I just would like something to walk on outside my back door besides dirt.
