screaming Insects..what are they?

Now that I'm opening my windows at night, I guess I'll a question that I've often worried about...

What insect (or insects) are making all that racket??? Locusts? Crickets?

and where the heck are they? In the trees?

It is like a mass chorus that is so big that I can't distinguish any individual sounds. Meaning, I can't tell if each critter is making just a little chirp... but when one million of them make the chirp, it sounds like one continuous "screeeeeeee!".

Cicadas are pretty much gone here. They are big noise makers during the heat of summer though. You are probably hearing Katydids right now. They get pretty big and loud.

I've seen a couple cicadas in the last week. I was limbing up a sycamore and nearly got divebombed by two screaming irritated cicadas. Nearly threw my back out trying to get out of the way!

I stand corrected. (Well...actually I'm sitting corrected.)

As it got hotter over the weekend I started hearing the cicadas again. (Dry flies is what I grew up knowing them as.)

They do prefer the hotter weather.
