Wildflower Walk

I spent this morning on a wildflower walk at the UT Arboretum in Oak Ridge and came back with a new appreciation for wildflowers. Kris Light, a local teacher and wildflower guru, led us on a tour of some very biologically diverse areas. I have walked past these areas before and had no idea of how many neat things were hidden in what I thought of as not much more than a weed patch.

We've discussed Mountain Mint on here before. On the hike, we found three different types within a fairly small area. We also found things like wild Passiflora (passionflower) and Gentiana (gentian). I was just amazed at what would pop up in a field when it was left alone except for a single mowing in the winter.

If anyone is interested in a really neat reference site about Tennessee Wildflowers, Kris's website has around 700 types of Tennessee Wildflowers listed along with photos, descriptions, and locations.

Here is a link that might be useful: EastTennesseeWildflowers.com
