Dwarf shade loving tree ideas?

I need your help, guys and gals. Have any of you successfully grown a dwarf tree in a spot that stays relatively moist and doesn't get any direct sunlight? I was looking at Japanese Maples but am trying to come up with other options. We'd prefer that it not grow taller than 6 or 7 feet. Please share your experiences, if you want! Thanks!

I can't think of many "trees" that fit that bill - 6' is pretty small. Why not a shrub? That will widen your choices considerably! :)

Connie, that would certainly simplify matters, wouldn't it? :) This is a narrow setback or nook in the front of our house--between the garage and front porch. It's maybe 7 feet wide, so we need something that is fairly upright rather than wide.

How about a weeping redbud?

I don't know, 7' sounds like it would be enough width to support most medium-sized shrubs. Many people in our neighborhood have limbed up old overgrown hollies to create something that looks more like a tree, if the tree look is what you're after. Weeping redbud sounds good. Japanese Maples are sure gorgeous, and I don't know if you can beat those for an accent plant near your front porch. :) I've gone a little Japanese Maple crazy this year. ;) I just bought a very nice Sango Kaku this weekend for an area similar to what you're describing. This is going to be a phenomenal four-season tree...the bark is red in winter, and the fall color is just to die for.

Yea, I loooooooooooove Japanese Maples! Just don't know if they'd work for your limited space situation.

Maybe a rhododendron of some kind? I'm a Japanese Maple fan as well!
