which way leads to madness faster?

Which is more dangerous? to try more varieties, or to start extra seeds 'just in case'? In my case I have to make a special effort to get more varieties, and it costs (being in the centre of the continent isn't as convenient as it sounds). It is for me relatively easy though to start more seeds. But then what to do with the extra plants? Surely some friends will want them. And if not, who am I to throw away a perfectly healthy Jaune Flammee or Cherokee Purple? I'm SURE I'll find a bit of room for them. But on the other hand, maybe I should give Green Grape a try - it sounds really good .... Joe

I'm a bit reluctant to bring this up, Joe. But have you thought about all the seeds which never get planted? If you are concerned about what to do with surplus seedlings, what about surplus seeds? Don't they deserve a life too? I think they do. This is something I worry about.

Yes, I have considered - and worried about - this. But they will survive another year. Or I can let them free to fend for themselves. Joe

You could ding dong ditch the extra plants around the neighborhood..you know place the plant on the doorstep, ring the bell and run! Or just talk about tomatoes so much at work you turn them into tomato fanatics and then fob off your extras on them! I do the later, but I'm contemplating the former. = )

Personally I like the ding dong ditch method.

There is always the seed fairy.

Guerilla gardening is another possible solution. Plant them at the base of road signs, which provides an easy method of staking. Those little landscaped triangles at intersections are an especially nice spot for this, IMO.

Oh Jim, you're an inspiration!

My public library/rec centre has this wonderful sunny garden area that hitherto has been overly populated by flowers. They could benefit from some taller plants in the back row. I wonder if I need to sneak in stepping stones to get to the back later in the season?? Hmmmm...
