I was wandering around the yard yesterday afternoon and discovered a tulip poking his little nose out of the ground. The little feller is only about 3/4 of an inch tall. Won't be too long, now. Even though February in Kansas has been known to be the worst month of the winter, I have hopes.

Truthfully, Tom, we could really use some of that. Or rain or something. It is powder dry here. The volunteer fire dept. goes out at least once a day on grass fires. It's getting spooky.

We've just had pretty much the warmest January on record here in the Raleigh area. Not only are the Narcissus foliage well up, but many varieties have well developed buds. And, the very pink double flowered flowering cherry trees are in full bloom (too bad - we are getting a blast of 25 deg nights coming on). craig

I hear ya big_mike - I have a client in OK and he is struggling with the same "dry, firery weather" ... do hope you guys get some rain - Craig - yeah the weather has been wacky all along the e. coast ... my mums popped up the other day !! I was like ... but your not supposed to be here until the end of March!!! ~ Tom

My wife point out the Krocuses to me yesterday. Definitely funny weather but then again it has never done what I have expected. Just bought seed starting soil today. Can't wait. My wife is due to give birth on the 20th so I will have some time at home to set up shop. Greg

Congrats on the pending new arrival. I get my first grand daughter in Mid-March.

big_mike, Luanne and I often go camping and run into my parents in their RV. Both our 3 daughters and my Parents dig it. My dad takes many great pictures. So do you have an RV yet? :-) Greg
RE: A sign of spring
| | |
Nope. Still a working stiff. The only recreational vehicle I have is my garden tiller. Not sure that an RV is in my plans, either. With growing veggies and flowers and my wood shop, a 60 hour work week is about all I have time for right now. Once I get rid of that pesky job, then maybe I can do a couple other things.

What's all that white stuff in the picture? ~Heidi (living in dry, dry Oklahoma too-and has not had any rain in over 4 months)
RE: A sign of spring

Heidi - I wish I could send some your way - we are expecting 8-12 inches of the stuff by noon Sunday ; this is really putting off my mater season ! ... ;0( ~ Tom |

There is great concern in NYS for the apple orchards and other fruit crops b'c buds have appeared and there will be damage, no doubt about it. Heck, it's only early Feb and a friend who stopped by yesterday told me of the crocuses and daffodils and grape hyacinth poking up and shrubs and trees also showing buds. Since I don't drive out this time of the year I can't see that and I can't see the huge patches of daffodils around my property from inside here and I'm not allowed on the lawn with my walker. This AM is was 5F. There will be severe damage. But what can one do when we've had so many days above freezing and up to the high 40's and a few days into the 50's. This is FAR from typical winter weather here. We've had more rain than snow. The most snow we've had at one time was 4 inches and that was wiped out two days later with a steady rain. The rest of what snow we've seen is some snow showers and flurries, mostly moving off the Great Lakes to the East. Given the high cost of fuel it's a blessing to many that the general pattern so far has been on the warm side. If my dear Grandma Male were alive she'd say....we'll pay for this, we'll pay for this. And Gram was often right more times than I'd like to mention. She was the best at predicting the weather, thanks to the arthritic toe on her right foot. LOL Carolyn

I woke up this morning to the signs of Spring buried under a coating of the white stuff. The robins frequenting the birdbath got a real shock by returning a bit too early this year. I just hope the lilac buds will be able to withstand the cold. No other trees have shown signs of budding yet. We are taking a mid-winter visit to what we hope will be warmer weather in Oklahoma. Our first overnight stop will be in El Dorado or Augusta or Winfield unless you happen to have a Toyota Tundra on your lot, Mike. We could make it a swing to the east if you do.

paulf_ne - I'm with you - snow started @ 8pm last night - woke up ? 14 inches + !!! And I live @ the beach !!! and its still not stopped @ 1:38 pm - lol.. This weather is squashing any dreams of an early spring - looks like I really have to wait for April 4th+ ... bummer ~ Tom ps. Carolyn - the weather has been wacky - my grandparents revolve around the "old farmers alamanac" - every year has been pretty close - but this year ? no way ~

I Just had a look a NOAA's prediction for the average temperatures of Feb-March-April 2006. They said that for the Mid-Atlantic Region temperatures would be above normal. If thats true I will be very pleased. Nothing like being able to put the plants outside April 1st and then just leave them there. Greg
RE: A sign of spring
| | |
lol ~ above average was right - FOR LAST WEEK ! WE GOT 14"+ INCHES OF SNOW THIS WEEKEND !!! ~ TOM
RE: A sign of spring

Paulf, sorry no Tundra's. Lots of Dakotas and Ram's though. We got enough snow to amount to a couple inches had it stuck. But it is so dry, it evaporated before it hardly hit the ground. Also noticed daffodils coming up on the south side of the church yesterday morning. 55 degrees this afternoon and still dry as a brick on top of a wood stove. |

big_mike ~ so you don't have this right now ? lol ~ Tom (who can't wait for spring a second longer, lol)

Sooo, how do you get your steaks to that grill, Tom? Nah, I haven't seen something like that in at least 5 years. We had 8 inches of heavy, wet snow about mid-December that was gone in 3 days and other than a flurry here and there, we've had zero moisture since late October. I have a new garden spot that may or may not get used this year, depending on when and if we get rain. I would have loved to have half what you got, I think we would have both been happier. I do have a picture of me standing in front of a feed delivery truck from either 78 or 79. The truck was 11 ft 9 inches tall and was sitting in between drifts taller than the truck. It can happen in Kansas.
