beefsteak tomato looking sickly

My wife and I have never tried to grow tomatoes before. We planted a Beefsteak Tomato plant in a 5 gal pickle bucket, using potting mix.(I drilled 5 1" holes in the bottom for drainage). Added miracle grow for tomatoes. The plant gets full sun, and plenty of heat (70's at night, 90+ during the day). It gets 2 quarts of water at night, and one in the morning. Along with whatever rain happens to fall.
The problem is, altho the plant is full of tomatoes, they aren't getting any bigger, and are beginning to split. The leaves are curling and turning brown. The whole thing has been more or less stagnant for about 3 weeks now. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
