Great picture! Those are top quality tomatoes.
Any tips on taking pictures? I have problems getting the lighting right to show the true colors.

Bruce -

Your pics are always mouthwatering!!

RE: Today's Haul

Thanks Julie.

Feral, I just try to get as much natural sunlight as possible and use a flash fill. I had to adjust the exposure on this one because the MLPS tomatoes kept getting washed out. This was taken by an open window. I usually take them outside in full sun but it was too hot that day.

The best tip, which is easy with a digital camera, is take 10 and pick the best one to post.

oh my ,,,,,,, i have 75 "greenies" still waiting in the wings - but wow ; what a great harvest ~ Tom

RE: Today's Haul

Really enjoying your pics, Bruce. Thanks heaps. They're hleping me cope with winter.

I have a couple of questions: I'm looking for an intense cherry and does Isis Candy fit that description; is Tappy's any good as Tappy was the childhood nickname of my partner; and how do your rate Morgage Lifter Pesta Strain? I didn't know the latter was a yellow.

Thanks, Grub, who thinks he better grow Carbon this season.

Bruce, Carbon has been a personal favorite of mine for a couple of years. I see that you're also growing PR and Vorlon this season. How would you compare those two to Carbon in terms of taste?

I've grown PR before, and I don't recall it being as impressive tasting as Carbon. But, that was one of the worst seasons for me ever so that could have skewed my impression.

RE: Today's Haul

Hi Grub,

Nice to see you stop by. Bet you’re anxious to get those seedlings going. That was a great pic last year of your seedlings lined up in front of the heater.

Tappy’s is very good (Finest ol’ Tappy could come up with.. ;-)…). I have some still green that are huge compared the one in the picture.

The MLPS is excellent. Almost on par with Burrackers Favorite and much bigger. That’s good because my BF is very ribbed this year and none are ripe yet. Don’t know what happened there. Hopefully they will still be tasty. The tomato by the T in Tangella is a MLPS. As they ripen the red striping almost takes over. The very yellow ones aren’t quite ripe.

I tried Isis Candy last year at a tasting and just had to grow it this year. It’s sweet but still has a very good, rich tomato taste. So far I’ve tried 2 here and they haven’t lived up to expectations. I’m sure they’ll get better.

Good luck on your tomato starts and season,

Bruce

Hi Suze9,

I'll try them together with Black Krim and let you know. A few days ago I tried Black Prince and Vorlon. I much preferred the BP.

That is just a beautiful platter of maters. I hope to see something similar in mid august....

Bruce , I keep coming back and coming back to this thread to look at your tomatoes. The colors are so vibrant.
Do you mind me asking what kind of camera you have?
Thanks Farkee

 o
RE: Today's Haul

Thanks Farkee,

It’s nothing great, anyway not the newest Canon Digital Rebel that I’d really like to have. I’m using an Olympus D-560 4MP. I only picked that one because it was the best camera for the price at the time and I received a discount on top of that.

I do open the pictures with Photoshop and hit the sharpen button but I don’t adjust the color or anything else. I wanted it mainly for web pictures and it does a pretty good job at that.

Here’s the same picture before the labels. I can never remember what works in yahoo and what doesn’t so I hope this is one that works. (Picturetrail shrinks the photo)

Thanks for the information, Bruce. I am looking into getting another camera one of these days so I spend alot of time on those camera review sites.

Besides tomatoes, I want to take macro shots of insects so I found an interesting site called BugGuide.net. They have a forum where one of the threads discusses various camera questions. Of course the Rebel is mentioned as are others. Sure is confusing though--they all have their die-hard fans. Thanks again, Farkee

Thanks for taking the time to reply to me Bruce. I like these mutual admiration threads. Will keep an eye out for more of your pics. I'm starting to think daily about making a list :)

RE: Today's Haul

Some other varieties are starting to come in. Isis Candy is much improved after the disappointing first few.

Bruce, you've got a photographer's green thumb! You should toss some of those photos at some magazines. Plus a tomato article to go with them. :-)

WOW!! That is incredible-sure provides inspiration to go out and start building some new raised beds. What sort of set-up do you have for raising all those tomatoes? I think you posted a shot once of your garden. Wasn't it alot of raised beds in your backyard with some great looking tomato plants?? Do you grow in containers too? How many tomatoes do you try to grow of each variety to get a fair comparison? Earl is right --people would love to read an experienced person's take on how to successfully grow heirloom tomatoes (and you have the photos to go with it).

RE: Today's Haul

when will my tomatoes ripen

 o
RE: Today's Haul

Again, really enjoyed looking at the pictures and reading the photography tips. Can't believe this one was about to drop off...

 o
RE: Today's Haul

Love this. Once they come through and I put my mind to it, well, more tomato eye-candy but from Downunder.

 o
RE: Today's Haul

Somehow I feel a flood of pictures from
"Downunder" is about to start! LOL

Never get tired of seeing all those tomatoes set up on the concrete. Bruce, I showed that one to group of Master Gardeners (when I got your permission) and they were very impressed. (No kidding! I don't think most of them knew there were so many different kinds of tomatoes and that photo is just the tip of the iceberg.) Thanks again.
