Mystery Hot Pepper

Compatriot Patrina, a very generous lady, sent me these chillie or hot pepper seedlings in the mail 18 months ago. They sat in pots, frozen in time, not even growingm a whisker. Till four months ago, a year later, and bam. Two have taken off. This is one of them. I have heaps of these chillies with tits. I'm wondering what colour they will be.

RE: Mystery Hot Pepper, Brown Maybe?

Just a wild a$$ guess but possibly a Brown Congo? The color will be the key. I think I see a 'waist' developing at the top.

Where's Patrina, she would know in a second. Too busy tending those 200 plants, or whatever the number was, to check in here I recon.

Thanks Bruce,
I'll check to see if it gets the collar. Can't wait to make a salsa with Matts Wild, sungold, or whatever.

Also very similar looking to one I grew years ago called Lemon Drop - depends upon what color it ripens. (Lemon Drop is bright yellow).

Yep, it could be Lemon Drop, or Macskasarga Cat Yellow. It's a bit difficult to tell how flat and how thin fleshed it is from the pic. The shape reminds me of a C.baccatum (can't remember the PI # off hand) that I also grew, and it ripened bright orange. If it's that one, it's very hot and a bit crunchy (the skin was a bit thicker than Lemon Drop). I can look up the number for you - let's just see what colour it ripens to first.

Thanks Craig and PP.

I'm away for a week on the boat and I reckon we'll have colour by the time I get home. It's a quite thin, light-fleshed number and a nice tall loaded bush.

Another one I got from you PP is alongside and flowering. So it will be interesting to know what it is. A common name would be fine.

I brought two haberneros on the boat and gee those orange bells are nice and hot. I let the jalapenoes ripen to red but no heast there.

Cheers, Grub.

RE: Mystery Hot Pepper

It turned out to be orange and the tree is loaded with them like Christmas candles. I thought, yeh, probably not too hot given the quantity. Omigawd! It's as hot as the hottest of Habs. I have growing. Maybe hotter :)

I think Patrina who supplid the sedling has identified it to a tee above when she says:

Any ideas for dealing with 100 of these infernoes?

RE: Mystery Hot Pepper

Get out the canner and make a boatload of salsa, Grub. You'll find that the heat does diminish a bit in the canning process. What I tasted in the pot as being hot, even to my Sicilian tastebuds turned out to be somewhat mild in the finished product. So experiment and see what works for you.

Cheers,
Julianna

PS BTW, if your intention is to torture us with your pictures, you've succeeded !

Julianna,
Just sharing in the spoils ;
Thanks for the salsa tip.
I'll give it a go with some of the oodles of cherries coming online.
Good health and future tomato growing.
