Buying Tomato Plants

Posted by lera Zone 5 MI (My Page) on

Hi, I am unable to grow my own tomato plants from seed this year due to an out of town committment. I don't need very many plants, but I do like Heirlooms. Can someone recommend a good place to order plants from? I noted that Burpee has plants that would work for me, but I don't know about their plants. I like their seeds. Can someone point me in the right direction. Thank you.

Here are a number of places that I believe sell and ship tomato plants.

http://www.selectedplants.com
http://www.heirloomtomatoplants.com/
http://www.tomatoheirlooms.com/
http://www.selectedplants.com
http://tomatobabycompany.com
http://www.tastefulgarden.com
http://www.naturalgardening.com

The first site is owned by Dar Jones, who posts as Fusion here. I'd recommend him first if he has heirloom tomato plants that interest you.

People also highly recommend Laurel's plants, the second site listed.

You can check out the other sites, too.

My local greenhouse grow their own plants, yours might also. Mine also grow several heirlooms, not all of them, but several. Check your local greenhouse, not the big box places.

I ordered from selectedplants last year and they were great. Great selection, all plants were a good size, and nicely packaged. This year I am going to get my plants from a local nursery - they had a really good selection last year of SSE plants that included all of the more well-known heirlooms.

Atwood's a farm supply store had some heirloom tomato plants in spring here. Also our local MFA another farm store had some.

Last year I used tastefulgarden.com and Whiteflowerfarm.com. I was happy with both. Tasteful garden did make a substition I wasn't happy with without asking me first, but they sent the correct plant when more became available when I emailed them that I wasn't happy about it. Whiteflowerfarm is in my state but an hour and a half away, and some plants are only avilailable mail order, so I did mail order them. Some people have had problems with plant condition from them if they are sent south too late in the season, but they have a short trip for me, and the plants were large and healthy. I think they have gotten very expensive, however. I plan to try Selected Plants this year.

What are you loooking for? I have some experience mailing wildflower seedlings, tomatoes are at least that tough.

Shipping tomato plants works but you never know what happens in the mail. In my opinion, the best way to get your plants is to stop by the local nursery and buy your plants. They will tell you everything you need to know about transplanting and watering. Plus, it supports your local businesses.

snowmanaxp, chiliPlants.com has 3 pages of eggplants! w00t! Thanks, for sharing that link.

For tomatoes I strongly agree with others who have listed "selectedplants.com" for the huge selection and great service & price you get a free one, too.

Thanks for all of the helpful suggestions. I am sure the plants at select are wonderful but with shipping they would be nearly $10 per plant. Are they that good? Not for me. I did decide to order some from Burpee. They had several heirloom groups to choose from and were less expensive. I'll let you know how the plants look when they arrive somewhere in the distant future. I'll also be looking locally, but they are usually very limited in heirlooms. Thanks again.

Where do you live in Michigan? I sell plants and would ship for you. I sell nothing but heirlooms. Send me an email.

I also recommend SelectedPlants.

RE: Buying Tomato Plants

No way I would pay $10 including shipping for a tomato plant.
Do people actually do that? I sold a few of my excess tomato plants using Craigslist last year to try to recoup part of the cost of growing my own plants, and was charging $1 to $2 apiece for really healthy, stocky heirloom and Sun Gold plants. Maybe I should charge more this year, does $3.00 a plant sound good for heirlooms or even the better hybrids?

RE: Buying Tomato Plants

It all depends on your market, find out what everyone around is selling for and price accordingly. I sold over 600 tomato plants (heirlooms)for 4.00 each and did not get one complaint as to the price being to high. this year I will have around 3000 plants and 1000 pepper plants. And will start shipping this year if the need arises. I used to give away all my extras but since being laid off i decided to sell them. I have expanded my greenhouse and am putting up a 40x20 hoophouse in about a month.

Only "mail-order" plants I've ever spent good money on came from Seed Savers ("dot-org") in Iowa. Arrived perfect, did well. I'd go back to them in a pinch without hesitation.
