bottom heat for cold weather seeds

Plan to start some lettuce and allium seeds this year. Will they germinate better indoors with or without bottom heat?

I would tend to germinate those WITHOUT bottom heat if I'm indoors with temps in the 60s.

For cool weather crops in particular, added warmth over the 60s Fahrenheit decreases germination rates, rather than increasing them. That's according to the charts in Mel Bartholomew's Square Foot Gardening book, which I have found to be reasonably accurate.

I assume you meant this for the Vegetable forum rather than here? But I agree with the above. Lettuce and allium seeds do just fine without bottom heat. Alliums will tolerate up to 70 degrees but lettuce prefers cooler soil temps in the 50-60 degree range or cooler IME.

Thank you for your helpful responses. I thought I WAS on the veggie forum (LOL). The memory tends to skip a few steps after passing eighty.

Hey, I'm living proof the memory skips steps even before 80. :-)
