Store-bought tomatoes sprouted! Check it out!

Has this happened to anyone else? This past fall, I left a store-bought 'tomato on the vine' on my kitchen counter for several weeks. It didn't rot, but instead got a little bumpy, and when I finally got around to cutting it open, I found the seeds inside had all sprouted - complete with little leaves! I transferred a clump of these sprouts into dirt in a pot on the back porch table, where they continued to grow. Several weeks later, my boyfriend transplanted the healthiest of the bunch into their own separate pots. We now have three healthy tomato plants, about a foot high each, all with many blooms and tiny tomatoes starting!

btw, the next time I bought tomatoes at the store, they did the same thing! I gave those sprouts to a friend...

I had a pickling cucumber do this to me last fall/early winter. I let the cuke get yellow on the vine before harvesting it and then I kept it inside for a couple of months to allow it to mature more. I must have left it too long because when I cut into it, it had some little sprouts inside. Not to this extent though.

Edit: I should mention that I was saving seeds from the cucumber which is why I let it get mature.

How awesome! What kind of store bought tomato was it?

theforgotten- did you try to save any of the little seedlings?

surya55- No, I didn't. I haven't got the space nor lighting to grow cucumbers inside.

surya55 - that's the funniest part - the brand name of these tomatoes-on-the-vine is Magic Sun! You can see the sprouts trying to push through the skin here.
